I'm looking at an HP after sending my Dell back for a full refund. Loved the way it performed (Dell) hated the problems and service.

Here's the one I'm looking at. HP m9407C-B. If you have any suggestions for an improved product I'd really like to hear what you think about it - pluses and minuses. I will be using it almost exclusively for photo editing. I'm using PS2 right now. Total including monitor is $1399 at Sams' Club. Sorry for the massive amount of info. Thanks for your input.

Consider 3-4 500G SAS drives running at 10,000 RPM configured as RAID 5.

Faster, more room for photos and your DVR storage, and RAID protection from hard drive failure. Expensive though.

Alternatively, consider adding a smaller 2nd drive for Photoshop to use as a scratch drive during editing.

Pro's: lots of nice nuts and bolts

Con's: HP customer service will have you crawling back to Dell begging for forgiveness

That's no lie... Dell may be outsourced to India, but HP outsources to Hell.

Good to know! Well, is there a brand which provides a reliable product as well as good service? Or, is it the same with all of them?

That is the most true statement I've heard today. I work for the IT department at my school and we use HP computers for everything and it is an absolute nightmare to do anything with them. Their stupid website hardly ever works for ordering warranty repair parts to begin with so we're dead in the water half the time. So yeah, get a Dell or if you can do your own computer support...build your own. Avoid the HP. On the other hand, the specs look good!

This stuff is far too confusing for me! Just get something with a lot of memory and RAM.

In no way do I want to start a battle here, but I figured I would comment on Apple's customer service: it's fantastic in my experience. I had my hard drive crash on me (hurray for back-ups!) and I took it to an Apple Store at the Mall. I had my computer back in 2 days with a new hard drive and it cost me nothing (I have the Apple Care Plan). It was easy and fast.

I'm not against the idea of a Mac, just leary of the cost. What would a comparable machine cost, anyway, including a good monitor?

OK, I did the math. I could buy a PC, have it die and buy a 2nd one for the price of an equivalent Mac. And, I didn't even add any fun stuff. Macs are pricey! Though I'm sure they are worth the investment. Just can't do it right now.
