i was recently at a wrestling match this morning and my friends mom comes in sporting her camera, which i knew she had before... the camera consists of a
580ex flash
50mm 1.8
70-200 f/2.8L IS
some wide angle L glass didnt get to see the numbers
a canon 1D mark II
a maxed out macbook pro
and more little accesories such as 4 memory cards and othere filters (that she doesnt use)

now, i know she bought it all new...

so you might be saying whats the big deal right?
WRONG
she ws asking me how to do this, and how to do that, and i ws happy to help... but seriously she couldnt even change drive modes, on the camera
she didnt have her protection filters on her 70-200 she owns like all top of the line filters...
and then all she does is take some pictures of her son getting pinned(he sucks) and thats it
oh, and she doesnt know how to change the sync speed on her flash or how to do anything for that mater, she just sticks it on and if it works it works

does this ever piss anyone else off, or is it just me?

Don't worry about it, someone will always have more money than you to buy all the gear and blah blah blah who cares.. the end result is what matters, if she gets on your nerves about all the questions then tell her to buy you a nice lump of glass and you will give her expert tuition or tell her to pour herself an ice cold glass of STFU and take a hike.. don't stress it cos someone has all the top gear and sux.

If you are actually ANGRY, you have a problem. Envious, jealous, that's understandable. But anger? being "pissed off"? That's off the charts.

Anyway, is it possible the gear's mostly her husband's, and HE knows how to use it?

It's just you.

Or hey, here's a thought: be friendly and helpful. Crazy, I know.

Being friendly and helpful has all kinds of benefits:
1) lower blood pressure
2) you get to learn how to teach
3) she gets to learn how to shoot
4) you might make a friend
5) she might lend you stuff
6) she might have a daughter (or son, if that's what you prefer)

Even thinking purely selfishly, if you help her take a stunning shot of your friend, then your friend feels good and she feels good. That can lead to all kinds of good things for you.

Instead of angering you, you also might feel pity. This poor woman bought a lot of fancy gear she doesn't know how to use. Either it came from a camera shop that didn't bother asking what her needs were or help her understand how to use it, or she bought it online and doesn't know where to turn for help.

You can do great stuff with cheap gear and garbage snapshots with expensive equipment. Certainly, this woman went to a store wanting "the best". What salesperson would turn that down and sell them a compact instead?

I ran into a woman at a parade the other day who had a Nikon D40. I inquired how she liked it and she said she loves it. She told me she could not take good pictures until she got that camera. I kept my mouth shut, but I wanted to mention that more of good photography was the photographer than the camera. And, yes, I was a little jealous of her having better equipment than me.

I've seen some others do some stuff that puts me to shame using just a $100 P&S.

I also had the experience someone else mentioned a few weeks ago, Someone at work noticed my photography and complimented me by saying I must have a really good camera. It's certainly still a compliment, and appreciated, though I prefer that I get the credit rather than the camera. (Most people just notice my coworker's picture of a 10 foot dead snake stretched across his truck's tailgate.)

On the other hand, another visitor to my office, who is into photography himself (and I believe is currently a lurker on this site) gave me the "you have a good eye" compliment. That's the one I like to hear!

I love those situations. I'll see a pro at a wedding with a Canon Mark Something-or-other and all kinds of white lenses. Then I'll try to take photos with a little Rebel that put his to shame and offer them to the happy couple. Who do you think is more annoyed? ;-P

Sounds like the opposite of "Gear-Snobbery".... "Skill-Snobbery"

Don't be a snob, it's snobbish. I thumb my nose at snobs. ;-)

But just think, somewhere, there'll be someone going around with a hassleblad and not having a clue how to use that.

There will always be someone with more money and less sense so i wouldn't worry about it. Also, it does mean that she won't need to buy anything new for a long long time now she has all that stuff, so in the long run, she's actually saving herself money by jumpming in at the deep end.

It's You...

If you are not inclined to provide any form of assistance to this lady, simply tell her so in a nice way and carry on as if she wasn't there.

The fact that she has nice expensive gear is by no means an indication that she knows how to operate it. There are countless numbers of people that drive very elaborate vehicles that know nothing about them, and the same could be said for photographic equipment and computer items.

Lastly, do try to look inwardly on occasion and wonder if it ever happens that you ask questions that others might find truly simplistic ... and conduct yourself accordingly.

I too have a bevy of expensive equipment which I know little about and remain ever so thankful that there are countless of really knowledgeable individuals on this site that have and continue to answer my rather inane questions, and provide me with the guidance I so desperately need.

Just a thought,

Ray

Jeez, Ray, I just looked over your equipment- that's a well-stocked lens cupboard you keep :)

How many limbs did you sell for all that?

Actually, I do take your point. I know someone with an SLR and all kinds of expensive lenses... shoots everything in AUTO mode. Flash comes out for pretty much everything. Drives me up the wall but I bite my tongue!

Yup have to agree with Spazmo99 and most of the others, sorry its you buddy...

Just a side thought though, was your knowledge of photography genetically encoded in to your mind? Or did you actually learn how to use your camera from a book or someone else? I'm not trying to be snarky here but we all have to start somewhere...

"Anyway, is it possible the gear's mostly her husband's, and HE knows how to use it?"
This is a very valid comment but we must remember that the use of the word "HE" in capitals in the original message is pretty exclusive seeing as it is not only males who can learn to use proper cameras. It is just as likely that this lady had a lesbian partner who was perfectly adequate at using this equipment.

it was a bit of a sexist comment. I'm sure bear meant to say "maybe its someone else's stuff she's borrowed?"

I laughed ... and then it occurred to me that you might actually be serious.

Not that there's anything wrong with that (lesbians) but Jib said it was his friend's mom, which would make any typical person immediately assume that Jib's friend was the product of a male-female marriage, and thus if it was someone else's equipment it probably would be the dad's (we can safely rule out sister due to the price of said equipment, and how often do you borrow someone else's entire suite of camera gear). Besides, I'm pretty sure the capitalized HE was to add emphasis that it was someone other than the mom, not that it had to be a man. This is the reason PC has run amok in the U.S. and everyone is afraid to say what they think.

There are plenty of husbandless mothers, both with and without female partners ... assumptions are a dangerous thing -- I suggest using them with extreme caution.

Then just change the word "husband's" to "partner's" and all is good, and we can get back to original topic :)

Btw, the use of the masculine when gender is unknown is still proper grammar...

Ironic to read lessons in political correctness written by a person named after one of the biggest cock rock bands in history. Thanks for telling us how you'd like us to talk.
