I was wondering what everyone does when they are in a rut in the creativity department. I think it will be interesting to see what kinds of things everyone does to help get their creative minds flowing.

I usually just go out and shoot or I get a model and try to get things going again.

I feel I have been in a slump lately too, and the gray weather and lack of green outside seemed to have damped my creativity and the overcast hasnt' helped much either. Not to mention the coldness.

Enter a challenge...Or not enter a challenge, if I have been entering a lot lately.

The short answer is keep shooting, but here is my long answer. I work for a company part time that shoots late night events (parties, dance club/bar) and in about 2 hours time frame I run off about 300-400 shots depending upon the group. Now, that is 300-400 shots I TURN IN. I actually take more than that and since I know what my company is looking for and what will sell for them and what won't I am not afraid depending upon the night to take some really creative ones to see how they will turn out and either delete them if they aren't in line with where the company wants me to go or keep them if they rock and I want to see if they will sell. Either way nothing helps me get the creativity back like just plain shooting. I can shoot 75-100 shots and subconsciously you just get bored with the norm so your mind heads out into what cool thing could I do with this mode. :) Good LUCK getting back your photo mojo!

When I'm in a rut, which is most of the time, I give into it. I do nothing for months, then one day, I'll do something.

Seems to work.

That is what happens with me. However, I want to shoot so so badly it kills me, and if I can't think of anything interesting to shoot, then I don't. I don't get off work until 5 then traffic, by the time I can get home to my camera it 6:30 and getting dark, but first i have to tend to the dogs, etc. So I try and think of things I can shoot indoors...and nothing. It's killing me. I need to photograph!!!

Go shoot an event. Always easy when you just shoot what is there and don't have to create something to shoot. Its still somewhat nice in Tally this time of year as I recall so run down to Lake Ella or something at FSU or the rock climbing wall place. Just some place where lots is going on so you don't have to be creative to find something to shoot you just get to be creative with the shot that is already there.

Do, or want to do?

I want to go away and be alone. Not easy as my wife works and i'm home during the day with my kids (age 4 and 6). She tells me take them to the sitter, but then I feel guilty to be out doing 'selfish' things when I should be with them.

Try one of the side-challenges, have a go at one of Freeman Patterson's exercises, listen to some photography podcasts, browse Flickr for some ideas to steal ( sorry, I mean emulate), find something to home in on (such as macros), go for a walk without a camera and look for the photo-opportunities that might present themselves and then try to visualise how you would capture them......

I'm with GoldBerry about doing nothing. I try to remember my own nothingness, a sort of Zen thing. But this is a classic time of year in the northern hemisphere for lows: every year my pre-Christmas paralysis gets worse. Not sure that's the same thing as actively doing nothing; taking a walk without the camera would be more like it.

When you find out, let me know, I think I'm kinda in a rut myself.

Try and take a bunch of nudes. Then share and see if that works.

Should I shower and shave before our shoot on Monday, Leroy?

Take one picture every day. Do not allow yourself any excuses. If you can take your camera to work with you, try this: as you are walking from your car to the building, look for the first piece of parking lot trash you see & snapshoot it immediately where it lies, without thinking. Or, you could start a series of tail light pictures. The energy it takes to put off taking a shot is greater than the energy it takes to find & take the 'perfect shot'.

I agree with the other guys' comments (apart from those leftfield nude ones). When i get in a rut i either look at portfolios online (not just of people here but on flickr, strobist, old masters, anywhere) or go into a nearby book shop and check out the stuff they have there on the things i like- photojournalism, portraits, whatever. I find that usually helps.
