I bought a Nikon D40 2 weeks ago and the flash quit working. The shop I bought it from will defect it and give me another one - or allow me to upgrade which I'm already considering.
I'm thinking about a photography business in about a years time, after more training. So I'm assuming I will want another camera anyway.... and why not upgrade now than spend more $ down the road??
Should I upgrade to a D80 (which I brought home to test and I really do like it), or should I save my $ for more lenses and get a better camera later? |

Forgot who it was, but someone said that Camera Bodies come and go, but good glass should last forever...
It's really a personal opinion I think. If you know you will want to upgrade in a couple months/year; then upgrade now, but devote your self to learning the camera, unless you already know it.

If you are getting photography training, the D80 would definitely be an asset. If you can swing it, I'd say go for it.

was that said referring to film cameras? Aren't the sensors alone worth upgrading? |

if you bought it and the flash quit that soon... I'd insist on getting it replaced. not only contacting the store but Nikon aswell. if tat gets you no where I threaten complaining to the better buisness bureau, and if not small claims court. It your story is legit, which I have no reason to doubt it is... lol Thats what I would do and Im sure you'll get it replaced. |

Sure. As the next sensor will be, and the next... A body is, tops, a 5 year investment. Good glass is a lifetime investment. |

I just remember hearing it. Don't remember what it was directed at. |

Whoever it was is right. I'd prefer to invest in quality glass and wait to buy a body closer to 10months after its released. How much was the 40d when it came out? Did'nt that just come out the other day?
I see the body for around $1045 if thats really the price. |

My recollection is that the D40 has a limited repetoire of lenses, whereas the D80 will accept most Nikon lenses. If that is indeed correct (and please check to be sure I am correct), then you might be better off with the D80 rather than buying a lot of lenses for the D40 that you will not be able to use in the future when you do upgrade the body. |
