I would love to by a nice wide angle lens but at this point I do not have the money to do so. Has anyone used a wide angle filter, and are they alright?

I see lots on ebay ranging from $30-100 and thought I would try one out. Any recommendations. If anyone has any pics taken with one I would love to see the results.

Just for a reference I have a Nikon d50, and would be anning the filter to the 18-55 lense.

Are you talking about the "close-up filters" (+1/2/4 diopters, screw on the end of your lens) or a wide-angle converter (i.e., .5x, opposite of 2x teleconverter, mounts between the camera and the lens)?

I have used the close up filters (own a Hoya 67mm set) and they work okay, but the optical quality is not the best. They don't change the field of view all that much, just allow you to get much closer.

I am talking about the ones that attach to the lense. Much like this one:

Those wide-angle filters deliver execrable image quality. They can be fun if you're just playing around, but it really messes up the carefully-designed optics of your lens.

I'd definitely trust someone smart enough to use the word "execrable." If Bear had left his post to just the first sentence, I would have thought, "Whoa! Execrable! Must be good!" :)
