A friend of mine is looking to get a 250GB external hard drive. She obviously wants something reliable, but doesn't want to overpay.

Any suggestions on a good reliable drive at a reasonable price?

Thanks!

I have a western digital passport and it is awesome! Very compact and portable and super fast! 250GB $139.00.

Send her to the local Target store they routinely put these 500 and the smaller 320 for sale at close to $119 for the 320 and $139 for the 500GB. I have 2 sitting on as my backup systems. They work great.

I personally like the Western Digital Drives as I have been using them ever since Quantum was bought out years ago with little or no trouble and have close to 40 drives running on my workstations and servers...

Anyway dont get a single drive, NEVER back up to a single drive as they can and WILL fail at the worst possible time. WD I think has a couple nice bookshelf raids that you can get, Ive never personally used them but the drives are reliable... Being a 3D animator and rendering animations to my servers, my computers and drives are on 24/7/365 and can also be constantly working for months at a time without any sort of break while the machines are rendering so I need something that is reliable... Just food for thought but what ever you buy DO NOT back up to a single drive PLEASE :)

If you have one copy on a primary drive and one on the backup drive, what's the problem?

Well, wanting a new drive is certainly nothing to be emarassed about, but tell your "friend" that Costco sells some (i think they're called FreeAgent or something) in 500GB and 750GB flavors for reasonable prices. I've bought two different ones from eCost.com - one is a Maxtor NAS (ethernet - web management, can connect from any computer on the net, yada yada) and a Beyond Micro Mobile disk (500GB I think) for around $120-$150 a year or so ago. Both are great. Best advice for your "friend" might be to just go with low cost, but reliable Mfr.

Good luck. ...to your friend, I mean. *wink*

I recently bought a Maxtor 500GB external, and with a rebate, which came promply, it cost me $89.95.

Love it, and I breathe easier now.

Yeah I'm not sure what the problem is, I back up my main system to one, then back it up to the other, seems pretty safe to me.

This is just a bit too late, there were a lot of great deals on BF for some 500G external drives. There was a seagate at Best Buy for $90, that is the only one that comes to mind. I don't know of anything out there right now, but I do a lot of my online shopping by first checking bottomdollar.com, or pricegrabber.com they are the same site I think. Then you can see what you want to get and it will compare prices for you so you can get the best deal.

All I was getting at was not to take data from the main drive and copy to an external and then delete the stuff off of the main drive...

Good deal, but she doesn't want to spend anywhere near that much, and she's not an avid photographer like we are, so she doesn't need that much space. She just wants something she can use to store her music and occasional photos.

Target has 320GB externals for 89 bucks. Western Digital 'book' something, I forget the name. I've had a 160gig version of it for a couple years and had no problems. Don't know if they have target in your neck of the woods.

I've been using a Maxtor 500 GB OneTouch for two years now and it has served me well. Here are a few in the 300 GB range:
