I'm doing this research:
Photography (as a business) seems to be categorized, many photog define themselves as advertising or still life or nature.

So I wrote down a list of many categories and I want to try understand each. Note that I'm not an expert so probably I'm wrong in many points :)

Advertising: sell a product through a conceptual shot
Documentary: tell a story shooting it while it happens
Editorial: create a situation that tells a story
Fashion: this has something to do with the creation of a fictional character that the viewer may want to be and that is bound to a brand in some way
Fine Art: decorative???
Lifestyle: like fashion, but with a little Editorial in it??
Nature: decorative with some Documentary in it
Sport: specialized Documentary
Still Life: sells a product showing it
Stock: may be any of the others, but more abstract so may fit many situations
Portrait: specialized editorial
Wedding: some of documentary, some of editorial

whats missing? where am I wrong?

ciao :)

I think you need to split it into two broader groups - one based on CONTENT and one on USAGE.

So CONTENT might include:

Portraiture
Landscape
Nature/ Animals
Architecture
Fashion
Sport
Event photography (such as Weddings)
...and a whole lot more...

USAGE could then include:

Advertising
Documentary
Editorial
Fine Art
Entertainment
Stock
...and more...

There are some that are harder to classify, such as Wedding

What is this research FOR exactly?

It can be divided into five general categories, with sub categories

Wedding / Portrait are usually together - Focus on working with people, to sell to the client/subject.

Journalism - for newspapers, magazines, etc. Sports and wildlife can fall into this category (national geographic).

Sports and Events - little league to pro, soccer tournaments to Sports Illustrated, Often journalistic, but some commercial and fine art too.

Fine Art - landscapes, wildlife, etc are often here, as well as abstract and digital art.

Commercial - fashion, advertising, architectural, food are in this category.

Stock is a subcategory of any or all of the above.

thanks for the feedback.
I'm doing this research because I want to start building my portfolio and I don't want to put my favourite random shots in it but try to specialize in what I like more.
