I just did the test and submitted 3 photos to see if I can Join!
Anyone else here A member? What do you think about it?

It's just as addictive as this site. So, if you were thinking of getting out and actually taking photos, forget it. You will be spending all your time between the two sites. It has a tight community that welcomes active participants.
Good luck with your application. Use the forums and read the "save your jpegs right" thread!
Edit: and don't complain if ANY of your pictures gets rejected. That's a definite no-no.

what is with the downloading part? Is that just for the people who are members, or are they allowing corporations, etc to download and image for $2 and use it (and you get 10 cents)? Let me read more.
Read one forum here on the site. It sounds like it could be fun, but then again it sounds kind of scary and you are "giving away" your images. At least that is the impression I get.

I would be interested in a site that is free to photographers that provides a collection of digital photos that photo editors can sort through for their magazines/text books/whatever. Basically, as a single use right. Ideally, however, the photographer should be able to set his/her own price and the site either accepts a fixed fee, or a fixed fee plus percentage. Basically, a DPPrints type setup for single use rights.
Hey DP guys, how about spinning off a DPEditorialuse.com site based on the same model as DPPrints? |

I'm a member, but stopped actively submitting when:
1. I found DPC
2. I realized that .10 per download is just not enough for my photos. I've left a few on there that I don't ever anticipate selling...

There's also istockpro, you set your own price and alamy(?) where they manage both rf and licensed photos.
There was a discussion on istock about pricing, couldn't find the thread. The person that posted said that to make a living at photography as a stock photographer, you should receive 1.00 per year per photo. If you have a portfolio of 10,000 pictures to place at a stock agency, you should be doing ok. For people that don't have that kind of portfolio, places like istock can provide a way to build up both your skill and provide a place to host your pictures, all of it without costing you anything.
If you take people pictures, you can make money on istock. I would suggest that if you are interested, check out the portfolios of mammamaart and lisegagne.
They are doing great. I apologize if they didn't want to be dragged into this.
Also the pricing just changed. |

Here is a good resource that has a lot of good info on it...STOCKPHOTO.NET
Also there is a Yahoo group STOCKPHOTO that has great discussions of various agencies and the pros/cons of each, along with personal insights.
I have been monitoring the group for a while and have been very absorbed by other folks experiences with various agencies.
I haven't taken the plunge into it as yet, still researching my options.

I have to throw my 2 cents in on this one. Since this is what is destroying the stock photo market!
Selling your image for a 1$, let a alone 10 cents is ludicrous! All you do is make sure that someone else is making more money from your images than you are. And lowering all the other professionals income at the same time.
Here's an example from their site:

They'll keep it from there clients because the Agency can still charge what they would of normally paid and pocket the rest!
There are many great photographers out there who cant pay their bills, and there are many mediocre photographers (who are better business men then photographers) that make a good living. Wouldn't you like to be both good at photography AND good at "photography as a business"? By some books on the subject of "photography as a business" before you sell yourself too short! ;D |

no one will buy any of my photos for 50cents.
its crazy to let them - royalties are there to protect the artist from being raped by industry - and despite that they still get away with it.
this seems to be a good example.
i could relate this to the milk industry, in which, unlike most industries where the manufacturer reeps the most profits, in the milk industry the wholesalers and retailers do, leaving the farmers having to borrow money to keep the farm going, or the GOV to subsidize them, or they give up and quit. what incentive is there to produce when it doesnt do you any good to produce it ( barring the fun of photography )
