Ok...someone gave the winning photo ("Taking Cover") a 2, the second place photo ("Day Dreamer") a 2, and the third place photo ("April in May") a 3...what's up with that?!?!?!?!????

To each his own, I suppose ;)

There are definitely some people that do not understand the voting scale, or are just a**holes.

I think comments should be mandatory on any vote lower than a 4.

I couldn't help but comment that I found a profile where the user had 1159 votes, with an average of 1.819. While everyone is entitled to vote as they please, an average like that helps to explain why winning photos receive a few very low scores.

I made a similiar comment a few weeks ago and I honestly felt that none of my pictures deserved a one but there are a lot of ones being passed out by some people and I have my fair share of them. I don't think I have vote a one on any picture I do admit I do not give many trns either. Some people are just mean spirited or a**holes or both. the only problem I see is that talking about it here will only make "us" feel better and not change "their" voting patterns.

I guess that guy likes to waste time.

He most certainly does, since those votes would be ignored by the vote monitoring system :)

Is that why my total votes dropped by 15 right before midnight Sunday and my score increased by .2? (Not that the .2 did a bit of good, however!)

Some people vote once on all the pictures, then they go back through them and change some of their votes. That might explain it.

Yeah, but that doesn't explain the drop in number of votes or the fact that it happened instantaneously at around 11:59PM!

I'm thinking there's some kind of script that cleans out the "jerk votes" right before the contest ends.

Aaaah! I see said the blind man to the dead man who got up and walked away. (I dare ya to take a picture that conveys THAT statement!!)

There is. We've announced it in the forums, but I guess it should be in the rules/faq as well. Users who score 50% of votes images as 1s or 2s have their votes ignored. As you're also aware, users must vote on 20%+ to have their votes counted as well.

I thought the way to clear out jerk votes would be to have votes of 1 and 2 be visible to the public..(evil grin).

Then we will see who has the brass cajones to vote like an a-hole or who will cower into the safety of a a 3 vote to avoid scrutiny!!!

No particular interest other than to mess with the folks who like to do the messing :-)

I would gladly have my votes displayed to the photographer who made the photo... I have no fear of that whatsoever...
06/04/2002 12:16:12 PM · #15
Making the votes visible could possibly generate some useful discussion but I would expect that it would generate more nastiness than niceness in most cases...

I don't try to defend my photo's merit.. I also believe that asking someone why they gave me a one vote would be fruitless... If the person wanted me to know why I got a one vote, I'm sure they would leave it in a comment during the vote...

I don't think I would enjoy being bombarded with questions about why I gave a certain vote either. I comment on all the photos, and when I see issues that bug me on a particular shot, I try to describe it in the comment...

hey jm.....I agree with everything you said.

I really wasn't looking for useful information. I think I said I was just looking to mess with the folks who like to do the messing. >:-)

Terrorist like anonymity, hide in caves, all that..let's open those caves up......

I think all that would do would be to make for alot of negative comments. I try to comment when I have something to say that might point to a solution. As this snowballs comments will become more rare.

I agree with heritcon. I won't be able to comment on all photos this time, so I pick the ones where I feel I have something to say . . . and on Sunday I will make sure to comment on my top photos, because it is nice to hear that a photo made someone's top 10, too! :)

My wife reads these forums at times and this thread in particular.

I am the emotionally pensive and self depracating one and she is the "kick em in the arse and if they still don't get it..you didn't kick em hard enoough" kind of gal :-)

She says we are a bunch of pansies and if we can't make up our minds how to handle a-hole voters then we deserve the abuse.

Hmmmm...now I know why I married her ;-)..I like it rough <:-O

The first time I've voted was in the last challenge. Since I did give some 2's, 3's and 4's I'll try and explain my voting system.

First I looked at all the photos, and selected 2 that "to me" caught my attention in two criteria, the best and the worst in terms of addressing the subject matter, and then composition. Which would "I" most want displayed, and least want displayed on my den wall. These were given a 2 and a 9 vote. I don't think I've seen a perfect pic so far so no 10, and if someone went to the trouble, they deserve more than a 1. That leaves most photos in the realm of average, which was reflected in the fact that most of my votes ranged around 5 or 6. All photos aren't created equal, and some are certainly more equal than others. Even the great works of art wouldn't be rated equally with everyone. Let's face it...every work of art is subject to the observers biases of subject matter, personal taste, technique etc. I suspect most people voting on here have their own system of evaluation that will differ from most peoples, so I wouldn't be too concerned with trying to change everything in the voting. Good luck to all, and everyone, even those who got a 2 vote from me. It doesn't mean your photo was bad...it just didn't strike me.

I haven't even entered a picture, yet. I have not been happy enough with anything I've done to enter one. However, I have voted 3 times now, and I mostly rate 2-9, as well. I haven't commented, and I apologize. I hate to be critical of other people's work, because everything is in the eye of the beholder. I will start making a few comments here and there from now on, though. I didn't realize how important they were to everyone.

Here's how I vote... If I see a photo that I came up with in my attempts, then I feel the idea is too generic, so I vote lower, unless the picture is really good and creative. If there are many of the same ideas, I choose between them, and vote accordingly. The current challenge has too many pictures of people's white walls or their own shadow. There were a few cloud pictures, but one was spectacular, so I voted high on it.
