I just got a Canon A60 and Windows 98se doesnt seem to see it when its connected to USB.

If the computer has been rebooted the camera can be plugged in, but if you remove the USB cable and try reconnecting it, Windows just wont see it.

Should there not be a task bar icon for disconnecting the camera, i dont think i should just remove the USB cable by its self but thats the only thing i can do.

Whats going on ! ?

Please help me !

Since I'm running Windows XP, I'm not exactly sure why you're having the problem with Windows 98se. However, if you install the Canon software that came with your camera, it should see the USB connection immediately and work fine. I personally didn't like the Canon Viewer software that much, so I use Adobe Photoshop Album, which is not very expensive, but works quite well and is easy to use. Good luck!

USB was pretty new in the Win98 series, and you'll find very few people here that still run it to test for you. But it might help if you spell out your configuration more fully, and answer the following:

Are you connecting directly or through a hub? If so, is the hub powered or bus powered?

Do other peripherals still get recognized after the camera is not?

Are you disconnecting it through the connection manager, or just unplugging it?

It might be the easiest solution if you invest $30 or so and buy a USB based CF card reader. (Or if you have a laptop, the PCCard versions are only $10 and work even faster than USB.) Then you won't be unplugging anything except the media.

Thanks for the replys.

I'm running the camera through a powered hub.

I dont seem to have a connection manager, so i just inplug it direct from the USB (which cant be good)

I have uninstalled all the programmes and reinstalled everything and still i dont get a connection manager, where is it ?

I haven't had any problems using Windows 98se to download photos. I download directly into my Paintshop Pro files. I just plug in the camera, turn it on and go to the "My Computer" section to locate the "removable disc" selection. I've been doing this with PSP 7 through PSP 8.1. This also works with Adobe Photoshop 7 although I prefer to use the PSP for downloads from the camera.

I tend NOT to use the software that comes with the camera.

When I had a Canon Powershot A60 for a couple of weeks, this method worked with it as well.

See thats what i dont understand, i should have "Removable disk" appear in My Computer but it doesnt.

Have you loaded the driver included with your camera software?

Try getting a CF card reader. just plug it into your USB on your computer and then you leave it there. It just acts as another hard drive. You don't have to keep unplugging it from the usb port and it should always be available. Just highlight the pictures and download them and use viewing software or PS to edit and view. then you don't have to involve your camera at all in downloading your pics. Saves batteries on he camera and is faster also

It is possible the trouble is with the USB hub. Try plugging camera in directly to PC and see if it works. Seems unlikely, but it is possible.

Are/have you used your USB connection for any other hardware? Try left clicking on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. Then look at the "System Properties" then "Device Manager". Take a look at the USP controllers. That will show what's installed as far as drivers are concerned and will indicate if they are not working properly. If you see that they are not working, try removing them through the Device Manager and then reinstall with the software. Then check through the same method if they seem to be installed properly. Not sure if I'd have any more suggestions if this doesn't help, I'm not that good with this stuff. Just been there, done that a time or two...

Well it was worth a try. Good ol' Win98SE. How glad I am that I'm done with it.
Win98SE's USB support is pretty poor; I had trouble with it as well, though some don't seem to. I think it has to do with the support chipset on the motherboard, and/or drivers.
Troublshooting this could be a hair-pulling exercise (prolly is already for you).
One fairly certain solution might be to install WinXP. you'd sure gain alot in stability. I reboot once every three months whether I need it or not...
In any case you'll need someone fairly experinced to look at it and troubleshoot.

I use Win 98 with my A70 and I have no problem downloading the pics with the Zoombrowser. Though the camera never appeared as a removable disk! That's the reason I bought a card reader. Got it installed and no problems at all.

I have an A40, and haven't had any problems, but also haven't got the camera showing up as an extra drive... are you sure that's meant to happen? I just plug in my camera using a USB cable, and a window pops up asking what software you want to use. (I have Windows 2000 - so maybe that's the difference?)

Anyway, a question of my own... nshapiro mentioned a 'PCcard' for a laptop as a quicker way of uploading photos. Can someone explain this to me? I've heard of PCMCIA - is that the same? How can I tell if my laptop has this capability? Where can you get them?

Did you try to reboot after reinstalling programs? Would it help?
04/27/2004 04:02:15 PM · #19
I may have the solution to your problem. Install the CD1 disk with its drivers and programs. When prompted to reboot, do it.

When the computer reboots, connect your camera, set the little switch that switches from taking pictures to viewing pictures(flick it down) and then turn on the camera. Voila, the computer now finds the camera.

If it doesn't work, try logging in as the administrator, I had to do it. For more on how to do that if you are using XP look here: //www.tweakxp.com/tweak1421.aspx , doing it in Win2000 should be similar. I hope this was helpful.
