I am surprised that no one told me that I misspelled "Shepherd" in my title except my wife. I am writing to thank all of you that took the time to leave such great comments on my entry. It is so important to the struggling novice to hear comments from the more experienced photographer. That is one of the main reasons that I participate in the challenges. This was my second entry (my first was A Childhood Memory) and I am having a ball. Let me tell a little about my sheep herder picture.

I had noticed him and his sheep on my way to work early several mornings, and hoped that I would have an opportunity to get some shots of him, his dog, and the sheep. Finally Saturday rolled around and I got up before dawn, to ready myself for the excursion. When I got to where he was located, I was in luck as he was fairly close to the road and I felt that I would be able to talk to him and get his permission to take a few pictures. I gathered up my gear and headed out into the field taking pictures as I approached him. When I got close enough to ask him for his approval I found that he didn't speak any English. That was quite a barrier but he seemed to be okay with the pictures. I took several and motioned for him to get closer to the herd. As we worked our way towards them I kept shooting, in hopes to get a good shot of him, his dog, his sheep, the dry grass, and the hills in the distance. Then my beginners luck ran out, DEAD BATTERIES, and guess who left the extras at home on the kitchen cabinet? DAMN !

This all explains why the sheep are so hard to see and why the lighting just wasn't quite right and why I didn't get his dog. Of all the shots I took, his little Border Collie remained evasive leaving me no choice but to make the final picture without the all-important dog. He had a magazine rolled up in his hand and I could not get him to put it away due to our language barrier, and I didn't even notice the obscene logo on hit hat.

I must learn to look at the whole picture, and with your help I am sure to improve. Once again thank you all for the support.

My Canon camera came with a battery that lasts for ages. It also came with a second battery. I bought a separate charger that charges them superfast, too. (Full charge in about 40 minutes). However, my old camera used two AA batteries. I bought 4 rechargeables and a charger and charged them every night whether I was using them or not. When I woke up in the morning I'd pull them out and voila.....fresh batteries.

You might want to think of using rechargeables if you're using throwaways now. They're well worth the investment.
