I have been doing photography for some time.. mostly with an older camera. However, i am now using a canon 10D and have a lens hood for my 28-135 lens. I feel this is a dumb question, and probably should have been learned along with where the shutter button is.. but somehow no one ever brought it up in my 3 years of photography classes.

Is it used for all light sources?
Is it mostly for outdoors, shooting perpendicular or less to the sun?
or indoors with various light sources?
or all the time?

I have got a 'gig' shooting a jazz concert this weekend and don't want to look like a bigger dork that i need too, using a lens hood indoors if it doesn't do anything.. on the other hand if it DOES help, then i want to use it.

It protects against people bumping around, and you yourself will less likely touch the glass leaving fingerprints on the lens. It will always protect more or less, of rays of light (sun, spots) creating flare in the picture.
my eurocent, good shooting!

The lens hood's job is two-fold:

1.) To reduce off-axis light that can cause flare and contibute to reduced contrast

2.) To protect the front element without introducing additional glass

For that reason, it's always a good idea to use a lens hood, not that I always heed my own advice, LOL.
