I've had a look at the compatibility list which B&H links to on the battery which it lists as an accessoire for the 40D (the BP-511A). Canon's page lists both the 40D and the Rebel XT. Does that mean that the BP-511A also works for the Rebel? And, does that mean I can keep my old Rebel batteries (BP-2LH) for the 40D?

you have the rebel XT don't you? Not the plain rebel that was the 300d? The 350D takes NB-2L batteries i think (same as 400d).
The 40d one is a different shape- it has that weird hump effect to it, the rebel batteries are more rounded.
In essence, I don't think it would work. |

| I use the 350D Rebel XT for work and I own the 40D, the battery shapes are different. The 40D uses the BP-511A and this may also work with the XT but I don't think the reverse is true. |

The original digital Rebel (the 300D) does use the same battery as the 40D. The one that came with the 40D had a slightly higher mAh rating than the one that came with my 300D, but they are interchangeable. You are probably out of luck with the 350D or 400D

The BP-514 battery seems to be 10.10 x 4.90 x 5.00 (mm) larger in size suggesting that the battery would be loose and loose contact.

Okay, thanks guys. I wonder why Canon lists them in this way.
Well, I called the thread title 40D accessoires rather than batteries.
Has someone got an explanation why the BG-E2 is cheaper than the BG-E2N?

NO Its about the same battery grip, the difference is its weather resistant as is the 40D otherwise pretty much the same... |

| I concede that it has some weatherproofing. But the guys at the camera store I got it from had tried both on their display 40D and they said the N model fitted better. |

I just noticed that I wrote my question the wrong way around. On amazon, the new grip is actually cheaper than the old one.
