I'm a bit puzzled. My shot in the Painting with Light challenge did not do well. Of the four challenges I've participated in, this is my favorite capture, yet it bombed. I received only four comments, so I'm not really sure why it scored so poorly.

I'm not disappointed as much as I am confused. I really would like to know why this photo scored so low.

I gave you a 4 because I felt that the composition was bland. Nothing in the shot jumped out at me as particularly interesting.

I suspect that you got very few comments (as mine did, too) because it fell in that grey area of 'well not particularly bad, but not particularly interesting, either'.

Gave you an "8". I like the contours of the vase. The highlights and shadows bring out some of the details in the relief.

Unfortunately the color of the vase and the black background made the shot seem really dark. If most peoples' moniters weren't calibrated they would have seem much too dark.

The darkness kind of gave it a mood, thus I gave the higher score.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've tried to keep my monitor adequately calibrated. Still too dark.

i gave it a 5.. which i feel is sort of an average vote. The black background was a good choice, but it didn't really stir up any emotions or thoughts inside of me. I am not sure what i would have done differently.. or how i would have painted it different... but it looked like a vase with light flashed on it... as apposed to a picture that created thought, or intrigue or reflection, or just a nice combination of shapes and colors...

maybe (not saying that i know).. but maybe if you had higlighted the rim quite bright... then left the neck quite dark... and then highlighted the pattern area on the widest part, then let it get slowly darker as it went lower. With the painting with light theme you could illuminate this object quite creativly. Right now it is illuminated in the same stile as if there was a single light source from the frong right..... just some thoughts... take them with a grain of salt.
