Hm, are you sure that works? I get redirected to the normal submit.shutterstock.com site, no mention of having been referred whatsoever.

It needs to be in this form, with the referrer's ID number at the end:

//submit.shutterstock.com/?ref=110

kirsty's link left out the "ref" part -- her number is 880

I still don't see a difference to the normal site. I have to click on the signup link to get anywhere.

//submit.shutterstock.com/?ref=144

if anybody else is interested :)

Just made my first Enhanced License Sale the other day and I got $20.00 off a single download. So, yes you can make more then then pennies that people talk about.

I haven't seen the sign-up page for a long time -- maybe it automatically registers the referring photographer's ID for you ... somewhat like when someone refers you to DPC Prints they will be credited with a commission on anything you buy that session.

Just have whoever you sign up under check and see if you are on their list of referrals after you complete the process.

Ooh, me too. :)

I removed my signature when I became site council, so I don't have anyone clicking. :(

But as long as there's a thread for it:

//submit.shutterstock.com/?ref=65

It does seem to not show any referral info when you click that, nor does it take you to the sign up page :(

Is shutterstock exclusive? Can you still submit your photos to other stock sites as well?

Absolutely. Most people at Shutterstock are on other non-exclusive sites as well.

Shutterstock's royalties are a bit lower than some other microstock sites, but there are usually a lot more downloads because fo their subscription-based model for subscribers.

Alright, I used the URL with Kirsty's ref ID as fixed by GeneralE. No mention of referral anyway, but I put her ID in the 'How did you hear about us' box when I signed up.

IMO Shutterstock will be your cash cow in the micro business. Istockphoto is growing quickly and as of last month when I pulled the plug on microstock was making nearly as much.

Those are the only two of the microstock sites I would recommend fooling with, the others are just not worth the time.

That should do it -- I'm sure she'll appreciate it.

Someone who's doing pretty well must've signed up a few weeks ago under my link, because my referred downloads just jumped by a factor of five or more -- whoever you are, keep up the great work! ;-)

Well, thanks for all that.
I was sure my ".../?rid=880" worked fine - I've definitely had referrals from my signature before; I too benefit from strangers who clicked on my link
fwiw, my understanding was that it wasn't explicit in telling you you'd been referred - it just stored a cookie for 30days, and if you signed up in that timeframe the referrer got your name.
but never mind, i'll go and replace rid with ref

Thanks for (hopefully) taking my referral, and thanks generale for not stealing it :)

A question: I signed up for shutterstock and it said it would send me a confirmation email....but it's been a full day and no email. Did something go wrong? Do I need to sign up again? or are they just slow?
10/07/2007 12:29:31 PM · #21
Ah, scratch that. I can log in to the site, they just never bothered to email me.
10/08/2007 09:19:49 AM · #22
good luck in the initial 10 images submission. make sure you check them over for noise in things like the sky and shadows.

Seems like you'll have to wait for money from the referral. They refused ten out of ten of my inital batch, which consisted solely of images selling quite well on iStock and Dreamstime.

Shutterstock reviewers seem to be very critical on new photogs nowadays. I try to help my referred photogs by pre-reviewing their first batch. It helps, but it's no guarantee: recently, one of my reffered photogs got rejected, while her first batch contained much better pictures than my pf on Shutterstock.

My advice is don't submit to Shutterstock- you get $.25 per download- is that really all your images are worth ??? I did it for a year and then removed all my photos...there is not a fair pay-out , unless you have hundreds of images on there.
