Pretty much straight forward, Im looking to get the 430 just for snapshots, for the upcoming holiday season.. The onboard flash is way to harshe-- I just want something to capture indoor shots that look natural.. I will be using the flash with mostly my new lens (tamron 28-75) and maybe the kit lens if needed..
My question is, how dummy proof is the operation, I just want to point and shoot..

Super easy. I have one. Try bouncing it off the ceiling or a wall. Works great.

Now Bear this isn't dummy proof. He might just break his flash now.

Bear-- just for snaps-- do use the P-mode and select flash for white balance, or do you use it in tv or av mode? (or other)

White balance set for flash. Tv or Av mode irrelevant. Just stry to get some bounce-flash practice time in. WB will change depending on color of surface bounced from. Shoot in RAW and no problem.

Here's the secret:

The reason your on-board flash looks so harsh is because it is a "point source of light". The smaller the source of light, the harsher the shadows become. The larger the source of light (in relation to the subject), the softer the shadows become.

So... in and of itself, simply having the 430EX does not solve the harsh shadows problem. If all you do is point the flash directly at your subject, you've done nothing except maybe move the flash head a few inches further from the lens axis. Which is a good thing, it reduces the likelyhood of redeye! But the harsh shadows remain.

The solution, as Bear has already suggested, is to point the flash at the ceiling or at the wall. Again, the bigger the source of light (ceiling or wall), the softer the shadows will be.

So you have the right idea... because the 430EX can do something the on-board flash cannot: it can be pointed in directions other than straight at the subject (but sometimes even that is desireable).

Go for it. You won't regret it. :-)

Buzz,

If you'd like, take a look at the Flash Test gallery in my S5 Test Shots album at PBase.

www.pbase.com/johngalt_ny

It's all just shots bouncing the light of a 430 EX around. It may give you some idea of the 430EX. I never had an external before and love the thing.

Hi, I just bought a 430 EX a month ago and I love it. I'm still playing around with it, but it's well worth the money and investment. I bought it to take my daughter's graduation photos.

Good luck!

It is also easy to adjust the power (+- 1/3rd stops, and focal length equivalent) by pushing a couple of the buttons on the back. Great if you need more power in a big room.

Yup, they're made to work together. Now go get that battery and let's see some pics! :-)
