Winter is approaching fast and am considering doing some small(ish) still life studio photography and master water drops during the colder months (about time I picked the old cam up again).

Thought/ideas on either continuous or flash for my lighting? Will be mainly table top photography and whilst I'd love to say money is no object I can't (but don't want to skimp). I already own the Canon 580EX and MT-24EX TTL Ring Light Flash so should I get a couple of 430's and create a flash studio or get some decent continuous lights? I'm also watching a couple of Sekonic L-758D 758 Light Meters that can trigger flashes remotely for levels whilst making the tea (have I talked myself into the flash route?).

Always looking for the easy life, anybody offer some setup options?

My suggestion is to get the 430's, a couple of stands, an umbrella or two and go that route.

As for a meter, I think the L758 is overkill, I have the 358 and it already does more than I want or need it to.

On the other hand, if your house is at all drafty in winter, like mine is, you might consider continuous lights since if you have enough wattage to shoot, the room you're shooting in will give you thoughts of the tropics.

thanks for the info, and yes, the 358 is probably good enough for my needs and means I can get a couple of 430's and maybe the stands/brollies for the same price as the 758 :)

My vote is for the strobes as well, I use a couple of 580's but the 430's should work well depending on how large your softbox/umbrellas are and what size subjects you are shooting.

The nice thing about strobes is that they are easy to setup, take down, and they are very portable should you need to tote them around at some point in time. With digital, modeling lights become less of an issue because you can look at your lighting outcome right away. I also really like the way Canon allows you to easily and quickly set your lighting ratios.

Check out //strobist.blogspot.com/ for some ideas.
