September 21st and 22nd will see air racing over San Diego Bay. I have never seen anything like this so it should be interesting. The planes compete (one at a time) around a course marked with 60 ft tall markers about ten feet above the water. Location is south of the USS Midway and Seaport Villiage. The Embarcadero is probably best viewing and is probably closed off for ticketed viewing. Coronado should offer a good location and in the afternoon would put the sun behind you and on the planes. This link is to another forum since it has the best map of the race location. I believe they will have training runs on Thursday and maybe Wednesday- but Wednesday may be just for setting up the course- the area is scheduled to be closed off then.

I've seen the ads for this on television and have wished that I could be in San Diego to shoot it. It sounds like a lot of fun.

The main problem, besides the 1,000's of people you'll have to contend with, is going to be that you're shooting into the sun. The races don't really go off until about 2pm and the finals run around 4pm.

The best place for shooting is probably going to be Coronado and I can only imagine the traffic.

Hey Rick you see the prices for the ticketed areas on Coronado? $1200 a pop...ouch.

I did get my tickets for the Hornblower which will sit out in the water there somewhere...

It's Fleetweek time in San Diego (a month and a half long week) //www.fleetweeksandiego.org/

Anyone doing a Chalet for the Miramar Airshow? I'm in the Flight Deck on Friday (supposedly the only day the Raptor flies)...

I checked with Hornblower today and unfortunately the ferry to Coronado will not be operating during the races due to the banning of water traffic in the area so the only way to Coronado will be via the bridge or the long way from the Strand and Imperial Beach. Could take a bus over. I was hoping to take that across since I don't have a car. I actually hope to catch some action on Thursday- the practice runs.

It will certainly be a unique event.

It is THursday. They are supposed to be having their practice runs today with racing tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday. Sunday is reserved for a rain day. Hopefully it will not rain on Friday as they say it might- that is the only day I can make it.
