hey folks,
I have been editing the metadata IPTC section of my shots...but once they are exported...emailed, ftp'd to my agency, etc there is no data visible/readable. Yet when I look at the shot/s in any IPTC editor all the info is there.

I have used Adobe Bridge CS and CS3, microsoft photo info. Also when I look at an image in these editor the info is there but when I look at them in win explorer nothing is readable.

Have I got some setting wrong...? Any suggestion appreciated.
Cheers Matt

Have you talked to your agency to see if thier storage method keeps the iptc data?

... or find out which IPTC fields they look at.

We use the 'older' version of IPTC (IIM - Legacy)

I'm fairly new to this iptc useage...but just can't work out why the info isn't being kept in the image and that it is only viewable with a designated IPTC editor.

It doesn't make any difference which IPTC viewer/editor you are using if the fields you are filling in aren't the ones your agency looks at.

windows property inspector doesn't show all the iptc fields, so forget that. you need to make sure you are sending the agency the actual saved files instead of exported files that have the metadata clipped (the save-for-web function can do this). another thing to consider is whether the agency's import software is doing any metadata clipping (i had this happen with a client that had not kept all their workstation software in-sync and an older version of their asset management system was clipping metadata produced by newer versions of photoshop. they upgraded the software on that machine and the problem went away).

good luck!

I have rang the editor and have confirmed that the fields i have filled are the same as the ones they 'look' at. Even stripped all the input field and re-selected each individual one as he read it off their program.

Skip...I import the image form card,, save originals to HDrive,, make a copy into anoth folder for working on,, do my editing/crop/resize/etc in CS,, open CS bridge,, select all images,, edit and apply the IPTC fields. These images are then UL'd to agency via ftp.

Appreciate you all helping out with this...

Are they being ftp'd directly from bridge or do you export them somehow first?
09/14/2007 09:39:55 PM · #9
Hey cpanaioti...I UL using CuteFTP 8.

Directly from Bridge or after you've exported from Bridge?

I'm just trying to figure out where in the process the IPTC info could be stripped.

If you're exporting from Bridge first then check any settings for the export that may be stripping the info.

I use WiseFTP so couldn't help you with that part of it but I can't see an ftp program doing anything but transferring the file.

Now, if the IPTC is in a sidecar file rather than with the image then that might explain it.

He's using the (free) Microsoft Photo Info, which does display all that information.

I ftp after I have finished with Bridge...open Cute FTP and UL from the folder the images are in.
I have bridge close or minimized atleast by now. I haven't seen where I can ftp using bridge. in CS1

You're not exporting from Bridge, right? You're editing in place.

It sounds like the IPTC info is being kept separate from the image files.
I'm thinking this since only Bridge can see the data.

Hey cpanaioti,

;) - it's not only Bridge,, but even if I edit the image in any IPTC editor...I have used PhotoMechanic 4, edited the iptc fields beore the images where ingested and still no info readible...

Maybe it's only readable in the program you used to edit the info in the first place. Try exporting from these programs making sure that the metadata is maintained on export (via setting of some sort).

That's the last thing I can think of to help you.

WooHOOOOO!!!!

It all works now...

Some where along the line of minor alteration and settings being juggled we seem to have hit the right combination that makes it work.

the Boss is happy...I'm happy ('coz now I don't have 1-2 hours re-editting to do)...so all is G.O.O.D yay yay

Thanks to all that offered advice. :)

Cheers Matthew
