I need some suggestions... I've been trying to get some shots for a friend of his son's football games, but the stadium lights are not very bright. Last game, I had to shoot on 800ISO and 1/400 was the minimum speed I could get with f/2.8, to eliminate motion blur, and the images still came out dark. Now, when I open them in Adobe Camera Raw to try and brighten the exposure, the noise is overwhelming (as I expected with 800ISO). I've run the images through NeatImage and it helps a little, but the quality of the photo ends up very poor. Anyone with tips on how to get a better quality shot would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Unfortunetly, f2.8 is the slowest I would go with a lens.

Football games usually let photogs use a flash, ask the coaching staff, or the venue management if you can use a flash if your next to the field.

If your in the stands, a flash is prolly ok being a fan and all.

Faster lens sets are key. You get shallower DOF, but the trade off is more light through the barrel.

Prime lens sets are much better to use than a telephoto,IMO that is.

Good luck.

That's on the list of "to gets," but for the moment, I can't afford new lenses.

I usually find myself shooting at iso 1600 @ 1/400" @ f/2.8 with a flash. As far as noise is concerned, an underexposed iso 800 shot is going to be noisier than a properly exposed iso 1600 shot after you post process it to bring the levels back up.
