Firstly I'd like to thank everyone for being so helpful to date with my questions about DSLR's.

Does anyone know of a fast 20-70ish range lens for my new d200? Lets pretend that price isnt an issue but realy Ive got up to about $1400 to spend on it.

Thanks again

With 1400$ to spend I would just go and get the 17-55 2.8. Very fast and very sharp. It should run you about 1200$. I wish I had one.

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 is exceptionally nice and very competitively priced, if it's wide enough for you. A lot of us use that lens.

Could get that lens and the tamron 17-50 2.8 for under $1400 easily :-)

Thanks for that guys

Ive got the 70-300 VR
and a sigma 10-20 ordered and paid just not delivered yet, but after awhile with the 70-300 on I've realised that Im going to need something to 'fill' the gap in range.

So Im off to check out some new glass now :)

In that case, I second the 17-55 2.8
And if you have anything left, you could look for a sigma 30mm 1.4 for documentairy/reports/etc (I love that one) or a nikon 50mm 1.4 for portraits.

Save for a few months and get the new 24-70 2.8 when it comes out in November? Should be around $1700US, and gives you the potential FF upgrade path in the future...

k4rp & cryanAre we talking nikon here? The best Price I can find for that one is $2400. Or are we talking 2nd hand?

and option that does sound tempting but FF isn't something that I'm working towards at the moment. That and $1700US is around $2000 here :(

Oopps forgot to say thanks, so... Thanks

Thats what I was afraid of... a bit pricy for me I think. Do you think the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 or the tamron 17-50 2.8 would be a better bet?

Everything I've heard indicates that both are great lenses.

I would say it depends on whether you think youll get more use out of the 17-28 or 50-75.

This Nikon 28-70mm 2.8 is close to your max range and is one of the best in their line. It's sharp at every range it handles short or long, side to side, with amazing contrast. It's heavy for a walk around lens but it kicks all kinds of butt.

Here are a few samples...

The Tamron 28-70mm is also a great lens (I own it) and a lot cheaper but the Nikon is better. You can really see the difference in larger prints but for smaller prints or the internet it doesn't matter.

Have you checked out Photo Buff yet? They have the best Australian prices I've been able to find yet.
