A new lens!

I have made enough money this summer to get a new lens. Last time I got a tele (70-200 f/4L) and now it's time for an ultra wide. Which is where I need your advice. I have it down to two options, which one would you choose and why?

Option 1: Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 ($690)

Option 2: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L ($680)

I do plan on going full frame someday, but not for a very long time. I need to get good glass before spending on the body. You guys have no idea how much I'm resisting ordering the 40D.

Anyway, thanks in advance for all suggestions and advice. I really appreciate it.

10-22, besides being an excellent lens, is the only one of those two that is really ultra wide on a 1.6 crop.

I was debating between those two also for a while and ended up going with the 17-40L and LOVE IT on my XTi. If you can try to rent them both over a couple days and see how you like them...

Option 1: Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 ($690)

having used one this past weekend, I can't believe I haven't invested on one myself.

I have both of these lenses. While I love the 10-22, it's the 17-40 that's on my camera most of the time. It's an incredible lens with a good all-purpose range. So I vote for the 17-40, but I know you'd also love the 10-22! Tough decision you've got there.

I don't have the 10-22mm, but I can attest to the 17-40 that is always on my camera.

I haven't bought into the EF-S system. I'm still waiting for a $1,000 FF. When it comes out, those EF-S lens will be worth the same as my elan7.

So...current vote count:

17-40mm: 3
10-22mm: 2

More opinions? What about the Tokina 12-24?

10-22mm is really amazing for its price.
I never thought I'd love that lens so much!

17-40mm it's an L glass, fantastic lens, but a bit of a waste of money on an APS-C sized sensor.

Don't buy a Tokina. Not if you are looking at those Canon lenses... No comparison

I just got the Canon 10-22it is SO MUCH MORE than I dreamed of!

I just LOVE wide angle images.

I also just got the Canon 100mm 2.8 USM Macro - not that you were asking but YEAH BABY!

Good luck with your choice I'm sure you'll be happy with your choice either way.

We rented the 10-22 last week and really loved it. It's so much fun and very sharp too.

I went through the same dillema, and wound up with the 17-40. I plan to go to full frame in the future, and the 10-22EFS will just not accomodate. Doing mostly landscae and architeure, I haven't had any issues with what I have. It will only get better with an upgrade
