Well...the shutter keeps on clicking even with the camera turned off! I have to remove the battery to get it to stop. Help. I think I'm in big trouble. :(

Is the shutter release stuck down? What was the last thing you did before this started happening?

Something stupid. I was switching lenses and I forgot to turn it off and I had my 580 still on, too. I don't remember too much after that... it started shooting all by itself and I went into shock.
I noticed an error message flashing and I popped the battery out to stop it. Took out the cf card. Removed the flash unit. Put everything back and tried again and the same thing.

I guess I'll send it in for evaluation. More than likely it will cost too much. I've been wanting to upgrade but just not yet. :(

Dont really know much about this but is there some kind of default that you can reset?

:-(
This is exactly what happened to me a couple of months ago on my big visit to the US. Went to the Canon center in Irvine, CA, and was told that the shutter had worn out from too many actuations. They replaced the shutter. The job took about a week and cost $200.

Isn't it frustrating? It's like the camera is possessed!

Can't bring up the menu to reset anything. Stil not sure whether or not I'll even send it for eval. Seems like a waste of money for a camera that's been replaced/upgraded a couple times already. I'm just going to have to think about it for a couple days and then decide.

Happened to my 20D as well, 300 canadian to get it fixed and nearly TEN weeks. My new Mark III arrived before I got my 20D back

Well, I sent it for eval. Going to wait and see what the cost is.
Congratulations on the Mark III, C-Fox. That would be my number one preference if I could swing it. Do you love it???

It seems there is a little discrepancy as to the cost. I had my shutter fail on my 20D about 6 or 8 months ago. I sent it in and was delighted to see they had replaced it for a total of 99 bucks. Oh yea, that did include a nice cleaning of the sensor as well. I have to believe that your 20D is worth paying a couple hundred bucks to have working like new.

With the intro of the 40D there will be tons of very good deals on gently used and/or refurbed 30Ds. If you're not wedded to the idea of buying a brand new cam, a 30D would be a great next step for you.

i'm afraid you may be in big trouble.

i hope its not the same for you. :(

Sent it to Canon. I approved the repair for a new shutter assy and some kind of switch. Sad part is only $35.95 on parts and almost $300 on labor. I was trying to get them to quote a new sensor while they had it disassembled but they said it was fine. Not sure if I made the right decision or not.
