Having just sold my 85mm because i needed the money i now need another Cheap (Under £100) lens.
Bokah is the main thing i would be looking for.

i loved the 85mm but the main problem i had with it was how close it was.

i have been looking at the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

anyone tell me about this lens or any alternatives??

thanks :)

J

the 50mm 1.8 is the single most impressive thing you can buy ... the lens is an absolute home run. Buy it and enjoy :)

1.5 and 1.6 crop can be a bitch sometimes huh? I use a Nikkor 35 f/2 for alot of portraiture work. It more closely mimics a true 50mm on an APS-C sensor. I got it for under $100 on Ebay. I don' know if Canon has a lens similar to those specs, but I know Sigma makes a 30 f/1.4 lens. That might be one to look into, though I don't know what it costs.

The 50mm 1.8 is my favorite... and it was the cheapest! Well except for my Tokina I got of Craigslist for $25.

Amazon were selling them for about £68 a week or so ago - I'm not sure if they are in stock or not at the moment though!

Good luck

Great lens. The 85mm certainly is a headache in close quarters on a 1.6x crop. When I got my 5D, I fell in love with the 85. I use it constantly now.

I realize you posted a budget, but if you can wait/save for the 50 1.4 it is a bit extra money well spent.

agree, the 85 1.8 is amazing on full-frame. I used to love my 50mm 1.8 on my old 300D, although it just doesnt cut it on the 5D..

Here's the deal: On a full frame sensor you want a lens between 70mm and 135mm for head and shoulders portraits to keep from getting the dognose effect. The 50mm 1.8 gives you 80mm equivalent on a APS-C sensor, the 85mm is 136mm. S0, they both are good for portraits.

As far as the 50mm 1.8 is concerned it is a great lens for portraits, it can't be beat for the price and in tight quarters, it feels quite good.

Another lens I suggest is the 28mm 2.8, another inexpensive lens. It's a "normal lens" on a cropped sensor and feels really good for 3/4 and full body portraits on its side and can do group work horizontally.

ETA: when I say a lens feels good for a purpose, I mean it gives you a good perspective for that purpose. It's not too long as to flatten an image, but not too wide as to distort perspective (such as the dognose effect). Flattening or perspective distortion aren't necessarily a function of the lens length, but rather the distance at which that lens encourages you to work. A short lens will encourage you to get too close to the subject distorting the perspective, for example.

I really like my 50mm 1.8. I was so used to zoom, that it took me just a bit to get used to actually moving ME instead of the lens to compose what I wanted. That alone has, I think, improved my shots.

This one provides a nice blurred background for portraits. I think you'll enjoy yours!

In terms of image quality, the 50 1.8 is one of the best lenses you can get for a Canon mount, at any price.

The build quality is a bit questionable (plastic, slower to focus) but the image quality is outstanding (because optically the lens design is trivial)

You can't get a better canon lens under $100, if you don't mind primes.

It's an awesome portrait lens on a 1.6x crop camera like yours.
