i have a client that is maintaining her own website, and i need a tool where she can quickly resize batches of photos easily. i'd like to be able to set it up so that she can just drag and drop a bunch of photos at a time.

any ideas for this? doesn't have to be fancy...pics are just going on the web. i'd just like to be able to set it up once so that she can run it over and over.

thanks in advance!

Have you tried IrfanView? It's free and can batch process process images.

//picasa.google.com/ lets you resize in batch by just dragging the required photos to the tray, and clicking 'Export'

Thumbnail and resizing

If your client has Windows XP as operating system, this is the quickest ever resizer I have come across, just a right click option and you can resize all the files at the same time (takes about a 1 minute to resize about 500 pictures)

Windows XP Powertoys, image resizer

Edit to add: didn't read the drag and drop thing, sorry I don't think this does that!

thanks for the response so far. i've looked at picasa, but am not sure it does what i need.

i need to be able to set up an action almost so that she can just play it over and over again.

ideally the situation would be:

1) i set up a resizing action for her that makes the photos the exact right size for the web

2) she copies files from her camera to her comp

3) she can select all of the files and drag them somewhere (or open a program) and then resize them using the pre-formatted action.

i know you can do this with photoshop and imageready, but her comp is old and she has no money. i don't think you can create droplets with elements, so i'm trying to figure out an alternative.

thoughts?

You forgot step 1a) Phone Rob Elliott and ask him for the tenth time what to do next.

yeah. i know. but i'm hoping that this will stem the tide of the "can you resize these images for me?" emails with 10 megs of attachments that i get every day. :) a few phone calls would be heaven.

alright after seeing your reply I still support the Powertoy for Windows XP - Image resizer - its a simple two step process -

After you have installed the software

1) Select image and right click
2) Open a dialog window, select the size and hit OK

MS Office picture viewer can resize batches pretty nicely. Don't know if the person is running a PC, but worth a shot.

Mucky send me a PM with your mailing address, I have a CD bundle software that came with my Wacom tablet. It has Elements 2.0 and corel painter essentials on it. I'll send it out to you and she can have it.

//www.neowise.com/etc/

express thumbnail creator.

can create batch thumbnails, resize originals, add drop shadows/borders, and can generate thumbnail galleries (in html).

the trial version of this web gallery software is fully functional for an evaluation period of 30 days.

Could Gimp be a possibility?

ahhhh....gloda beat me to it.

i've been running Gimp on my Linux and FreeBSD boxes for years. i'll do a little research to see if it will do what rob is needing. they do make a version for windows.

I see someone has already posted Express Thumbnail Creator - this can create gallery pages too (thumbnails on the gallery plus separate pages for bigger images).

Alternatively, FastStone Photo Resizer is free, and FastStone Image Viewer also has a resizer tool built in.

This is exactly what Picasa does....

If you plug in her camera (or card), it will come up with a box where she can pick to have them opened in Picasa. It will load all the pictures, she then would select all the picture in the file (or just the ones she wants) to export. In the dialog box you choose either full size (if you edited and want a copy of the edits in full) or custom (which can be set for web 640x480) and hit OK. All the files will be resized and put in a new folder. Downloaded and resized with the click of two buttons.

edit to add: I really think this is your best bet for someone not too computer literate. I set this up for my aunt for the same reason and all the phone calls stopped!!

I did that for my wife, wrote a small tool that does it. she only provides start id and end id, the program reads them resize them to the dimensions requested and saves another file with name 'sm_' attached to the original file.
if you want that I could mail it to you.

BreezeBrowser Pro, $70 (there is a cheaper non 'pro' version but i don't know what it does or dosen't do).

It can go from RAW to any size, including sharpening and watermarking, if you want.

I use it to resize wedding pictures for my web sales gallery and before i upload for printed proofs (don't need 3mb files for 4x6 prints). I routinely dump 500-600 files into it. Works great.

It can do a few other things as well, but I don't use it for that stuff.
