I need a good cheap slr or something that would work better than a point and shoot for yearbook. Lots of the shots are action shots and I don't want to have to wait for the camera to snap. I am on a tight budget but I am going to replace all of the yearbook equipment at my school. Any suggestions?

How tight is the budget and how many cameras do you need? Do you need several lenses for each camera, or will you just have a pool of lenses that each photographer could choose from for any assignment?

3, and it is junior high, so only one lens. Nothing fancy, just quick responsive 3+ megapixel shots.

So I guess you really don't have a Nikon D50?

Although now that you mention it, pooling lenses might be kind of cool. The ones shooting the sporting events could take a longer lens than the others that are shooting people standing at their locker. That is a good idea.

How about these however just for general use. I can get them for $150.

D40's or K100D's?

Maybe with the kit lens for general use, and some kind of tele zoom for the sports? I'm guessing you can't budget for 70-200's?

It has been a couple of years since I have owned a point and shoot so I don't know if there have any improvements in shutter lag, but for sporting events I think any point and shoot will be really frustrating, even the higher end ones.

One thing you might want to look into are auctions at nearby universities. Universities will get rid of some pretty decent photo equipment to make room for new stuff, and you can grab it up for a really good price.

Second hand Nikon D50's with either a kitlens or a 50mm 1.8 would be my suggestion.

Look at getting a different prime lens for each camera, or something like a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, a 70-300 for outdoor sports and a prime or two (50mm f/1.8, and/or 85mm f/1.8).

You'll need fast lenses for indoor sports and fast zooms are expensive. One photographer can carry two or three bodies, each with a different lens so they don't have to switch lenses during the action.

I am not sure what type of budget I am working with. I am thinking small, but I might find out I have a few thousand to work with. I just don't know.

Found out today that I have $2600 to work with. I need 3-5 cameras to get them going, and next year I will hopefully be able to invest in some better gear.

How bad is the sutter lag on this Z560 ?

DPC'er with equipment for sale

This just came up a little while ago, and may be of interest.

I would consider, however I am guessing that he would not take a PO...:(

Check into this one. I've recommended this to a number of people who didn't want to get into SLR but wanted something above a point and shoot. All were very happy with their purchase, and you can see by the specs it's an SLR w/o interchangable lenses for the most part.

You could easily fit half a dozen into your budget with change for memory.

Dpreview
has all that kinda info. Just do a search for the camera you want. Z650 shows a lag time of 2.1 secs shot to shot with flash off.

eeek. Thanks for the info!

I would go with some second hand D50's. A D40 will limit you to using AF-S lenses if you want AF. Get some 50mm f/1.8 lenses for shooting people and some 75-300mm lenses for sports.
