Anyone interested in an impromptu GTG at The Oregon International Air Show next weekend (Aug 10-12)?

If enough people want to go, we could get a private box on the flightline. The private boxes seat 10 people and cost $130 on Friday and $250 on Saturday or Sunday.

Or we could agree to meet somewhere and go with general admission tickets. Air Show Ticket Info.

* U.S. Navy Blue Angels
* The U.S. Navy Blue Angels C-130 Fat Albert
* U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Jump Team
* Sean Tucker and Team Oracle
* Greg Poe Air Shows
* Bill Reesman and his Red Bull MiG
* Air National Guard John Klatt
* Oregon Aero SkyDancer
* A10 West Coast Demonstration Team with the A1 Skyraider
* Renny Price and Hammerhead Aerobatics
* Roger Kelsay and his MiG and Provost Warbirds
* Experimental Aircraft Association Flight
* Oregon Model Aerobatic Team
* Pyrotechnic and Fireworks show (Friday night)

I'm sorry about the short notice people. Some of us were talking about photographing planes in this thread and I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to go see the show again this year.

So, how about it? Anyone want to go?

I might be interested but $$ is a bit tight right now so keeping the cost down is good. I may have plans this Friday but Saturday or Sunday work for me.

I'm planning on going Sat unless something comes up with work. I usually am there to get in when they open the gates so I can get to a good spot and stake it out right up against the fence. After the big blow up over taping the Portland sidewalks to stake out a spot for the Grand Floral Parade, I'm not going to depend on the flight line I left there last time to still be there. ;D

If my wife goes, then I'll have someone to protect the spot while I wonder around. At least it doesn't look like it's going to be as hot as it has sometimes in the past and it doesn't look like it will rain either. It should be a good show.

Well, I guess we won't be needing a private box. :D

I haven't decided which day(s) I want to go. Do you think Sunday might be a little less crowded than Saturday?

If we do pick a day and decide to meet, how do we find each other?

I'm sure I'll be easy to spot... I'll be the guy with the camera.

;)

It would be hard to pick a spot and time... unless it's after the Blue Angles are done (I think they are the last show).

I usually park over on the west side of the airport on 25th street. There are places that put you right next to one of the side gates and though it's still slow getting out, it's not as bad as trying to get out of the fairground parking lot. I could walk since I'm not that far from the airport, but I'll be lugging too much camera equipment... although leaving I'll probably be able to walk down 25th faster than driving.

I need to check on pre-buying tickets though so I don't have to wait in line to buy at the gate. I think you can get them at GI JOes, but I'm not sure. At least it looks like it's going to be decent weather for a change.

Can't you get free tickets? My wife told me that she thinks residents near the airport can get in free.

Do you bring a large camera bag? The web site says that no large backpacks are allowed, and I normally carry my camera gear in a Tenba backpack. I'm wondering if they'll let me take it in.

You can buy and print your tickets online if you want to.

LOL! I wish I could get in free. What they mean is those of us that live close can see the high acts from our upstairs window of our house and if we want to to the lower acts we have to get on our roofs... but it is free. :D I did that one year, I was up hanging from my chimminy with my Mamiya Sekor 1000DTL with a 200mm telephoto on it taking pictures of the jets flying over our house. I do much better now with my Canon and 100-400 lens from the side of the runway. :D

I wear a large Lowpro waist pack with my 1DMKII, 70-200 2.8L IS, 24-70 2.8L, 30 gig image tank for dumping my CF cards and other stuff in the pack and my Canon 100-400 lens in it's case on my belt. The only thing they said last time when I opened it all up for them was, "Wow, you have a lot of camera equipment. You should get some good shots." :D Now if I took my backpack they probably would say something. I like the waist pack because I can have everything at hand to switch lenses and I don't have to worry about setting it down and get distracted and lose track of it. And it leaves my hands free. Once I put the big lens on my camera, the pack itself is fairly light. I want to take my 17-40 4.0L but I it won't fit in my pack unless I put the camera around my neck, which I sometimes do so I have more room in the pack for a bottle of water.

Yes, I found their web site and started to get a ticket tonight but my wife hasn't decided if she is going yet. I don't think she will, but if she did it would be nice to save the money on pre-buying the tickets rather than pay the $20 at the gate. The pre-sale lasts until tomorrow at 5pm, so I have time to get them still.

When my wife worked for Intel, her friends told her that anyone living within a certain radius of the airport could get in free. They told her it was because the airport management preferred to have the homes around the flight line empty in case of accidents, such as the Hawker Hunter that crashed into a house during last year's show.

I think I'll just carry my 5D with the 70-200 attached and stick my 17-40 in the wife's camera bag. :)

I'll get tickets tomorrow, probably for Saturday's show.

I think I am going to go Sunday since its free for me. If anyone else is planning on going that day we could designate a place to meet such as one of the static displays or something. I'm sure that website has a list of static displays and we could pick one to meet at. Or if most of you are going to go on Saturday you could do the same thing but, I won't be there til the next day so don't look for me.... lol.

Sheryll, I didn't see a list of what displays they are going to have listed. Maybe one of us that goes Sat can post something that evening with a suggestion. They move things around and about the only area I'm sure will be there is the porta potty area. They put a lot of them in a centeral location. That might not be the best place to hang around waiting for others though. :D

We could just walk around and ask anyone with a camera, "Are you a dpchallenger?" :)

What we need is some official DPChallenge T-shirts so we can identify each other in a crowd.

That would be great wouldn't it? Hmmmm...... I think its been suggested before..... wonder when someone (sc? admin?) will make it happen.

I know there will be a "box" for veterans somewhere and that probably won't move so maybe that'd be a good spot.

It would be easy to have some shirts made using DPCPrints. Maybe D&L could make an 'official DPChallenge t-shirt image' available for members, then people could have their own t-shirts printed.

Do you mean the Dignity Memorial Veterans' Chalet? If so, then I hope you've received your invitation. I'm also a veteran, but I didn't register to receive a pass.

Next year I plan to request a media pass for the event.

I'll be wearing my blue baseball cap with Sit'n Pretty Photography embroderied across the front. I'll have a black LowePro waist pack on. I didn't see a lot of those last time I was there.

My wife decided not to go, so I get to borrow back my 5 2gig Sandisk cards I bought to use. Add those to my other CF cards and hopefully I won't need to use my Image Tank to dump my cards into unless have too.

I'll be the one that has a 5D and 70-200 lens stuck to my face. :)

Well I was just playing around and came up with these two. I don't like the simplicity of the ribbon on the first one but I blurred the edges on the second one a little too much. Anyway just playing around with the t-shirt idea...

There will also be air show in Eugene on the 25th and 26th.

I just got back from the show and after having gone to a bunch of Hillsboro airshows over the years I can say that this one the hotdogs and Blue Angles were the best part of the show.

The airshow committee must be really walking on eggs after the crash last year. All of the acts that came before the Blue Angles were higher, further away and slower. They ran it from the other end of the runway this time, which moved everything away from the general admission area. I wasn't the only one that felt something was missing either. A bunch of us around where I was started talking and they all agreed that they had really tamed down the acts and moved them further away.

The Blue Angles on the other hand were pretty close to their normally good show. The only thing I noticed is that they didn't go into afterburner very much (none of the other other high speed jets went into afterburner at all and they always did in the past) and it was for very brief times.

As I said, the hot dogs were good and the Blue Angles were excellent, I just wish I could have gone and got a couple of them, watched the Blue Angles and gone home. :D A few other acts were good but a lot were mostly filler and fluff. The place was packed though. I took about 10 gigs of raw shots out of the approximate 15 gigs worth of CF cards I took. Most of those I put my camera in fast mode and didn't worry about shooting off 20 shots at a time on the faster plans.

The ticket is good for a free admitance into the Oregon Bite and we might hit that on Sunday and see what they have good to eat.

Mike

I went Sunday and I don't know how many people with cameras that I asked.... are you a dpc'er? All of them answered no but it sparked a lot of conversations as I told them what it was. Maybe it'll bring some new members. Anyway I took 605 shots and will post some of the better ones here when I get to them but, I've got some wedding shots I need to get to first.
