From what I've read, it seems like lenses generally are sharper a stop down from maximum aperture. Is that accurate?
So for DOF, for example, it seems like I should check it wide open and 1 stop down and if the DOF is acceptable 1 stop down, I'm likely to get sharper results there.
Same would go for shutter speed - if I'm happy with the shutter speed I get one stop down from max aperture, I should go with it.
Of course, in situations where I want deep DOF (e.g., landscapes) or some blur, widest aperture isn't relevant.
Is that a good approach?

Lenses are generally sharper more toward the middle of their stop range. If you have a prime, then usually the 1stop thing will work, but for zooms there's a smaller window of exceptional sharpness depending on the lens. Doesn't mean you can't get good sharpness at 1-stop or even wide open, just not exceptional.
I'd say shoot what gives you the right light first, and worry about sharpness second. |

Yep, in a nutshell, the closer you get to f8 the sharper from either direction.

Depends on the lens. Some are best at 8, some 10, some 12... |

I got to thinking about that afterwards, I suppose it would depend on what the widest apt. setting is for each lens? like an f5.6 to f22 might be sharpest at say f11? Am I correct in that assumption? As wavelenth stated near the middle apt. setting.

The general rule of thumb for 'sharpness' in any give lens is two stops from wide open.

L lenses are also generally sharpest at 2 stops from wide open, just like any other lenses.
