I've narrowed it down to 3 choices, the 30d, k10d and the XTi. I'm also basing it on price so here they are.

30D = 1199 with 18-55mm lens
K10d = 1099 with 18-55mm lens
XTi = 1099 with 2 lens kit: 18-55 and 75-300

i'd appreciate your opinion :)

You have more lens choices with the Canon, aftermarket stuff I mean. Pentax has plenty of lenses of their own making.

I have the 20d and love it. The 30d has a bigger screen but is essentially the same. Great camera!

Go 30D if you can.

Outside of the one Nikon dude the rest have Canon anyways.

As far as Pentax's selection goes all their old K Mount lenses work on the KaF2 mount their more backwards and forwards compatable then Canon.

Canon has two thigns going for it you wont get with pentax, one pro glass (L Glass for the most part). Pentax's new lens line up while all good stuff, the DA* lineup is lacking. Canon also has USM lenses and Pentax's SDM lenses are not around yet.

There are plenty of aftermarket lenses out for Pentax but so far no Sonic Motor lenses out im guessing since The K100 super and the K10D just gained support for them.

If you do decide to go pentax k10d remember your getting in camera shake reduction no need for IS lenses, and its weather sealed for less then other brands.

Id say go canon though.

I would suggest you go to a camera store and get some first hand knowlege of how each camera feels in your hand before you make a choice. Once you find a body style you like. Then look for a camera in that line with the features you want or need.

If glass is your main concern Then stick with Canon or Nikon or a Body that will mount their glass, you will have the most options with those two brands. Again it boils down to what feels good in your hands.

Good Luck.

Get the 30D. Skip the kit lens. Get the 24-105 IS if you can afford it. If not the 28-135 is a great walk-around lens to get started with. Save money and skip the kit lens.

I started with the 30D body only and 28-135 and was very happy.

The thing about buying your first lens is that you WILL buy a better one; sooner than later. You think you are saving money today by buying the cheaper lens. But in the end you WILL buy the better lens, so in the long run buy the best lens up front you can afford.

And be aware. You are really buying into a lens family. The body will get upgraded one day. But by then you could have thousands of dollars of lenses.

I'd go straight for the 5D or 1d series and cut out the crap. My irrational logic for this is as follows. If you go straight for the big stuff then there are no incentives(other than mfg's upgrades) later to entice you to spend more or say damn I should've got the other one.

And you would go straight for a big bag full of White Lenses too. lol

They don't have to necessarily be white. They just need a red ring around them.

So we just bumped this poor guy up from $1200 up to about $6,000. Alot of help we are.

I would alter my advice and just say get the best body you can (30D) and buy your lenses when you can afford them. Don't buy the cheaper body just because you get a bucket of lenses with it.

In order to help I'll explain my thinking which made me choose Canon.

First off I asked for advice and got pretty much exactly what you got, lots of people saying canon, lots of people saying nikon and a few offering alternatives.

I then went and looked at ebay, because that's where I buy pretty much all my lenses. The ebay lenses list contains a bout twice or maybe three times as many canon to nikon lenses. No question then - the best body I could afford (10D at that time) and a couple of good second hand lenses - 50mm f1.8 mkII and a 28mm f2.8. A few weeks later I bought the 100mm f2.8 macro. All from ebay.

Don't buy junk lenses, go with the best you can get and use ebay to keep the cost down.

haha yeah i can't buy the 5D or the MK series... i don't have the money for that i'm just a teen. But i did just go to a camera store and they told me that all the pros are using 10 megapixels at least, so i think i'm leaning towards the pentax. Plus the pentax has tons of lenses to choose from if i wanna get more in the future. as well it has a stabilizer while the canons don't

How can you lug that thing around??

It reminds me of a time at canada's wonderland, I saw a guy struggling with a camera so big it must have been a medium format digital. He was using it to take pictures of garbage cans.

Dont listen to the salesmen..you will get a lot better advice here than in any camera shop.
Go for the 30D if the competitor is Pentax IMO.

All I want to share is that Canon provides the most unbelievable good service that I have ever experienced by any company in any industry. I called about my 5D. They diagnosed the problem in my first phone call. They provided me a post pre-paid mailer and sent me back (pre-paid postage)my 5D ALL WITH-IN ONE WEEK!!! By the way, the camera was less than a year old but they never tried to weasel out of the warranty EVEN THOUGH the problem was clearly my fault. They are amazing, and worth patronizing if for no other reason.

Good luck jrjr
