 THis is aFlat image of Hanah, straight off the Camera.
I would like some help as towards how you would make the background nice and white, in between Her Hair too !

Brightness & Contrast, Replace color in background to white, Curves, USM and save for the web. |

From this --> -- to this --> in about 30 seconds.
New layer via copy, Image, Adjustments, Selective Colors, drop-down to the white, then slide the bottom (black) slider to the left until you get the effect you want, then hit OK, the use the eraser tool with a soft-edged brush, and erase back everything but the background, then flatten. The same thing can be done by re-opening the image making the selective color adjustment, then use the history brush in normal mode and brush back everything but the background. Layer masks do the same as well, by painting a mask and applying the selective color adjustment to everything but what's in the mask.

Curves (set white point to the grey in bg of original);
Selective colours to tone down the reds, increase blues slightly;
Touch of NN on the face only;
Touch of sharpen on eyes only;
Blur bottom left edge of dress very slightly.

In the case of my edit, Elements does have curves, doesn't it? I don't know if it has selective colours, but if not it must have some way to adjust colour (intensity, tone). Noise reduction is independent of PS or Elements. Elements has sharpen.
I don't have Elements so I can't tell you exactly :) But many things can be done in more than one way. Curves is a very powerful tool, it's often a good place to start. Adjusting colour is always important - little changes in colour tonality or intensity make a huge difference. Just try it. |

Selective color correction>choose background and change to white
This will wash out the colors in the photo.
adjustment layer curves>lower the midtones and darks (can use the curves right on the image without the adjustment layer)
adjustment layer>hue/sat>move the reds over a bit to tone them down (they get a little rich after the curves adjustment) you can use the hue/sat without an adjustment layer also

increase exposure - +71
decrease offset - -.0216
increase gamma - +1.11
replace color - bg desaturated, increase brightness
increase contrast
decrease reds
blurred face - small file caused pixellation
new layer - set to color - fixed color on arm and hand to match face
I think thats it....

I did all that Ursula suggested but then via layers I selectively edited portions differently. For instance her hair got a little adjustment in midtones. Her lips got a little more red removed, her "eyeshadow" got a slight adjustment, her eyes were bumped in sat, brightened and sharpened, the whites of her eyes were whitened up a tad, etc. I used different transparency levels to suit to taste at each step and then once I was happy I flattened and the cleaned up any edges with the smear and blur tools. Oh and as Sunnie did with the blurring on her face because of the pixelation but I also blurred the upper left and right in the bg for the same reason. I used the sharpen tool in a few spots on stray hairs as well.
Oh and TJ I did all of it in PS Elements 5.0. Does the teacher need to be taught by the student now......LOL :)
