I have a question around the Land(not sea) challenge and how people vote. I've received a few comments that I would have gotten a higher score, but they "felt" it didn't meet the challenge.

Isn't/wouldn't the process for this be to simply hold voting and select "Click here if you suspect a rules violation" and let the site counsel decide...since they are the ones who wrote the challenge?

I still new to the site, and am just looking to learn the way things are done. :)

Not meeting the challenge is not breaking the rules. The rules are related to editing steps, image size, etc.

If you don't meet the challenge the only bad thing that will happen is your score will drop.

Oh...ok. Still seems like there would be a better way to decide something like this and make the votes a bit more meaningful.

Thanks for the reply!

I received the same thing. I shot a river at sunset, surrounded by land. It is not an ocean or sea. I submitted it to Land and received numerous remarks about the lovely colors and shot, but told I received low score for not following the description. If I put it in Sea, I would I have been marked down for having a river and not ocean?

They are meaningful in the sense that your score also reflects how well you met the challenge...part of the "challenge" is to photograph for the topic.

The tricky part can be the wide range of interpretations for some challenges. This will bite all of us in the ass, sooner than later!

*shrugs*...but this is why I asked the question. Mine had the side of a lake no bigger than a 75yrds square.

I think when most people vote they are including several factors - the two most important being 1) does this photo meet the challenge and 2) is it a good photo. The SC does not matter themselves with 'does not meet challenge' issues.

There have been many photos that were impeccable but where I voted a 5 on because they were shoehorned in. This could be a great photo that had nothing to do with the challenge. If it met the challenge maybe a 9, but not meeting the challenge a 5 or 6. Keeps us honest.

Yah...this is what I was driving at. I didn't mean to say they aren't meaningful. I just feel having the people who created the challenge have the final word prior to lowering a photo's score.

Oh...I've been under the impression they (SC) did. I do love having peole review and comment on my pictures. I'm just getting into photography and am looking for any/all ways to learn and improve. I guess I was a little bumbed to see my score break 6...and then drop down around 5.5 :(
