Met my cousins this weekend for the first time since I was about six years old. It was pretty weird to hang out with a bunch of people with the same last name.

I took this shot in terrible light, but figured it would HDR well for that funky Hollywood look. I think I was right.

What do you think?

That sky looks intense like that.

I think it works well, not overdone. It is fun to salvage an avg image and turn it into something useable. Good use of HDR

I think I'd prefer a slightly closer crop, emphasizing the people and taking a little stress off the dramatic sky.

I like the HDR look of the picture. The only problem I find is the effect it has done to the skin. Especially the man on the right (his arm is burned to dark), the man in the middle (his face has dark areas that is not ordinary), and the man second from the left (his leg looks like he has a deep and big scar). If there is a way to level out the skin, it would be a great shot. The sky, trees, grass, clouds, sun rays, and clothing looks great.

Take a look at this: www.hdrsoft.com
I've tried HDR very briefly in CS3 through the File->Automate menu, and it didn't do a very good job for me. Maybe I was doing something wrong? I used Photomatix for this shot. I don't know what Rainmotorsports is talking about (?)

Thanks folks. Thanks, Scott!

I know the original poster probably won't appreciate my opinion on this but is it only me that hates the 'fake' look of HDR images?

Sometimes it works sometimes it don't. I think in this situation it was used as a means to an end. It would be interesting to see an edited original for comparison.

I like the look of this photo, it's different from an average 'family' photo and the vibrant colors match the smiles.

Search the CS3 help for HDR.

Why I was asking is cause Ive read things that say you need to take a series of pictures with different exposures, and models who don't move - and my assumption is that this guy didn't have his family stand perfectly still for 10 pictures.

Hi AJ,

you can make a pseudo HDR image using a singel RAW file, there are many ways to do this. The most popular is using a plugin/standalone proggy by HDRSoft called Photomatix. The ideal way is to have 3 or more actual exposures (usually bracketed at -2 0 +2) but you can use as many as you like at whatever bracketing intervals you want.
However, you can create a number of mock exposures from a single RAW by adjusting the exposure slider and rendering several JPGs from a single image (photomatix can do this for you by opening a single RAW file).

This can be done natively in CS2/CS3 as well, but its a little trickier to get the three exposures as you must strip out the EXIF data before trying to open them in the HDR compnent of CSx.. too complicated to go into here, but there is LOADS of info on these forums regarding HDR.

Any questions, drop me a PM and I will see what I can do to help.

SOME HDR STUFF O' MINE.

Am I the only one thinks they all look like John McEnroe?

Simms, good post, thanks. Maybe I've been unsuccessful doing HDR in CS3 because I've missed the exif step. I'll give it another shot, as I don't like working at the lower pixel size Photomatix forces, it only uses a small part of my laptop's 1920x1200 screen.

Pug-H..... Har har har! :-D
