So much for doing artistic photos? At any rate, the entry that should have been up, but wasnt ready yet is on my page. I refuse to photograph nicely lit sporks to interest those people that voted me down. hahahahaha

And no one would want you to, but honestly, looking at all the comments on that shot, they all said the same thing, didn't see what you were going for, blurry, out of focus, to many reflections. I see the one you posted in your portfolio and it's a bit better but still would have only gotten a 4 or 5 from me, sorry ;)

Hey Deafwolf I voted your entry a 7. I felt it somewhat resembled an eye and being a camera lens added meaning to a budding photographer. I also liked the title. Photographs have the ability to bear ones soul. To bad about the score. I do have a tendency to vote my feelings more than the perfection of the picture at times.

Well, the photo isn't out of focus, it isn't to dark on any of my "calibrated" monitors and the "glair" was intentional. But now that I see the curb, I've been rewarding horrible shots with 4's and 5's because I saw the "art" in them. I suppose the nicely lit spork will get a blue ribbon acording to these guidelines. Thanks for the advice.

John, thanks. I try to be artistic, away from the norm with my photography as well as my music. I too vote on the creation, how well it was relayed and how much of the photographers soul was put into it.

I like the other shot much better than what you had entered.

I could not see what you were trying to show in the entry shot.

And yes my monitor is calibrated the best I can get without spending another $200-$600 :)

I have no objections to members going to the edge or whatever you choose to clasify it as. I vote on the idea, technical, quality and final product.

If you are like me it is hard to find someone you can ask for opinions before submission time. I had to really look hard to find someone to give me a straight out opinion of what they see in an entry.

HAHAHAHAHA

Robin, I'm not mad or anything, just disipointed at those 1's and 2's that in my eyes, rarely does anyone deserve. The're are trolls among us. hahahaha

I really like this sort of picture but even then, I'm not sure that I would have voted it well (I didn't vote in this challenge). It's fun and arty and has a distinct feel, but it doesn't really strike me as motivational. I think overall, yes, the voters prefer clear, sharp images, but I think it's especially hard in a case like this challenge where the idea was to create something modeled after a specific thing that we're all familiar with (clear, sharp, bright motivational posters). But cool picture anyway. :)

*sigh* And some people wonder why I quit leaving comments. I try very hard to be objective and honest because that is what I would want. Your shot may be very artistic but not to me, I'm sorry if that offends you but that is part of being an artist, you have to accept that not every thing you do will appeal to everyone, some will love it, some will like it, some JUST WILL NOT GET IT!

I didn't get it, sorry

Deannda, no, not mad or anything. You at least gave it a 3 because you didn't like it, or understand it, whichever, it's all cool. I appreciate your honesty!! You even commented which I respect. It’s the 1’s and 2’s quantity with not a peep, Trolls if you will, that really rile my dander. hahahaha

mk, thanks, I guess photography is much like music, its all so subjective that you either go with the crowd or stand out. I imagine I may try to please the "crisp, clean, normal" crowd now and then, but thats not realy why I do photography. I do it for the art, enjoyment and emotional feelings when I see a shot that just rocks. I've seen some artist on this site that had to have danced in front of their monitors after they saw the shot. Still though, I think all the 1's and 2's are trolls. I would expect some, but.....

Well, I'm not sure what I gave you, but I did "get it" - and since I didn't leave a comment, most likely gave a 5 or 6. I reserve 1s and 2s for those rare photos that are so bad that they're almost obviously just somebody trying to pawn off garbage just to see how it does. I've entered one shot in that category myself - and was surprised when it closed at over 4!

I wouldn't expect that they are trolls anymore than you are a troll for taking a photo that pleases you and not everyone else. It's just the way things are. As long as you're happy with what you're doing, it should be fine.

Kay, I gave your's a 6. If there was a bit more contrast I think I would have given it a 7. I guess I love high contrast B/W's. :)
01/05/2004 07:05:22 PM · #18
mk, I don't know why, but you come across very impersonal and sterile. Perhaps that’s just you and I’ve yet to understand who you are, but that’s just my perception so far. Nothing personal.

I thought this photo was cool, It made me think I thought I saw a camera inside an eye, I gave it a 9 I guess this site is too much of a stockphotosite for this one... :o
01/05/2004 07:22:45 PM · #20
I do think there's a bias toward the pretty or pleasing shot -- my last submissions have all been criticized for "ugly" subjects (also for technical difficulties which I certainly accept and learn from) but I am trying (right now) to get away from pretty. I hear you although you might listen to the technical criticisms as they are helpful in the long run.

Thanks Heiða, as you say, I guess I'm not much of a stock photo guy. Somehow now though, I have to get rid of that loooong titled picture on my page so it looks normal again, hahaha. Lookout spork, here I come. ;)

I don;t mind this type of photo.. but.
I couldn;t tell what it was, I couldn;t see how it fitted the subject (do now after reading what it was), there was no text on the image (which I felt there should've been considering it was a poster), was fairly dull, and the glare was distracting from... something, whatever it was.
sorry dude, really disliked it.
Looking at the one in your portfolio, I would've voted it higher.

I beleive you are the only 1 I gave..

Look on the good side, I like the rest of you photo's, just not this one (at all)
maybe its not trolls, just people with different tastes ;)

good luck with ya next shot man.

Andrew, another reason I think if someone gives a 1 or 2 they should be forced to say why. You're reason is you didn't like it. Well a 1 to most people is an insult, not a sign you didn't like it. If I hate a photo, I give it a 3 or 4 depending on the quality of the shot and how well they pulled it off. But even then, if I hate it, but it was a really decent photo, I give it more. A 10 tells someone that their photo was excelling, a 1 is an insult and slap in the face saying your work is crap. Just because I dislike, or even hate a photo, does not mean I give it a 1. And I know all people that gave it a 1 are not trolls, as mk suggested, but I still think the majority are. Again, just my opinion.

Thanks Andrew. I like your honesty and hold it in high regard.

Cheers
TC

I gave you a 2, and I dont consider myself a troll. I see a 2 being a valid score, just as 9 is also a valid score. You dont see people on the forums complaining that people are voting too high because a shot got a lot of 9's and 10's?

As for your shot, I thought it was too dark (I have quite a bright monitor), had distracting reflections and was lacking in contrast. Also I am not an 'artsy' type of person, so I guess I didnt 'get it'. Sorry.
01/05/2004 08:36:09 PM · #25
deafwolf,

Been there, done that. If you see my stuff, you'll see that I have some severely low ranked photos because I tried to be too artsy. Bottom line remains that artsy usually won't be understood but by a few, which is risky. But honestly, who cares what people think? Do what you think is proper. More power to that.
