How does one darken the edges of an image within the basic editing ruleset? I know this must be possible because I see it a lot and I'd like to know how they go about it?

use a cheap lens. i don't see any legal way in basic, otherwise I would have done that several times.

If you see a shot in a Basic Editing challenge that has a vignetted look, there are several possibilities as to how it was achieved:
- The properties of the lens. Wide lenses, especially on cameras with 35mm sensors, can show some vignetting. Not necessarily cheap lenses either ;-)
- Use of a filter or other obstructing device on the front of the lens
- The photographer lit the shot in such a way to specifically to provide that effect
If you're voting, and you see vignetting that you are not sure is legal, please do vote as if it were achieved legally, and ask for a review. We'll be glad to look at the shot, request proof if required, and take any necessary action.

Thank you for the explanation. In retrospect I can see that the images that had this appearance were either shot with a 5D and wide angle lens or they may have been lit that way specifically if it was a set up shot. I have never voted for them as if they were illegal and I like to learn as much as I can which is my reason for asking, though I may have been mistaken to assume that the effect was necessarily a result of post processing.

turn up the apture ie. in a pretty well lit room put your apture up to 10.
Play with it see what you can get
