Hi All, can anyone give me a bit of advice?

I'm looking for a macro lens for my Nikon D200.

At the minute I have a 12-24mm and a 50mm, I was thinking about getting the 60mm before I bought the 50mm, but now I have that I dont know if I should get the 60mm as its only 10mm difference or if I should go for the 105mm just to give a greater length for when I'm not using the macro. Has anybody used both of these and can give me any good and bad pointers?

Or can anybody recommend a different lens altogether?

cheers

I can vouch for the Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro being a nice lens, I think there are a few fans of that lens here.

Though I'd think any of the name brand macro lenses around the 90-105 mm range would do a good job.

I can also recommend the Tamron. It's a great lens.
In the end, it really depends on what you intend photographing. If you like photographing bugs it's handy having a bit more working distance between you and your subject.

I would like the Nikon 60MM, it is a very sharp lens. I would like even more the ursula Sigma 105MM. But if I could afford it, I'd get the new Nikon 105MM VR...though I do hear it is a heavy lens.

I have the nikon 105mm/2.8 and i really like it. Its not the VR version, but its sharp and has sweet bokeh.

I have the Sigma 105 which I purchased a short time ago based on research here. It produces great colors and very smooth backgrounds. It also doubles as a pretty decent short telephoto and portrait lens. Take a look at some of Ursula's stuff and you'll see why it pretty highly rated here.

D200 will meter with manual lenses. You have plenty of options beyond the current AF models. Take a look at the older stuff - 55/3.5, 105/2.8, Vivitar Series 1 90/2.5, Tokina 90/2.5, etc.

Or just grab a PK-13 extension ring and shoot with your 50/1.8 (you'll still get metering).

I have both the Nikon 60mm Micro and the 105VR mirco (the new one). I just purchased a D200 upgrading from a D70.
This is my experience. The Nikon 60mm micro takes tack sharp photos and is very fast lens. The best part is that the cost has gone down significantly. In addition, it is very lightweight. Unless your 50mm has micro capacilities I think you would be getting something quite different if you bought the 60mm.
I have not had the same success with the Nikon 105MM VR. It has a very difficult time with auto focus and misses about 50 percent of the time. However, the manual focus is easy to use on this lens..as you do not have to make any changes you can just turn the ring and will automatically go into manual mode. The problem is that it is heavy and so if you are hand holding this lens and trying to get to the ring and then holding the shutter button half way..it is cumbersome to say the least. I would highly recommend the 60mm, I would not recommend the 105mm VR. However, if you are can find and buy the former 105mm it is my understanding that takes photos which are as sharp as the newer 105, without the VR. It is also not so heavy, and does an excellent job at auto focusing. The last issue the auto focus is perhaps my greatest disappointment with this lens.
Good luck with your decision.

I have the 50 f/1.8 and the 60. They are both excellent lenses, especially for the price, and I use them for completely different things. I can focus much closer with the 60 than the 50. I used the old, non-VR 105 at a workshop a few weeks ago. It was a very nice lens, and a nice focal length, but I didn't feel it was different enough from my 60 to go out and buy one.

edit: still learning to type

2nd edit: If I were doing it again, I would seriously consider the Tamron 90. I hear that's a nice lens for the money.

well I would like to say thanks to you all for your replies, but seeing as you've all been really helpful and mention 2 other lenses that I didnt even think about, I dont think I will!! :D

damn helpful people - 4 to choose from now... my head hurts!!

seriously thanks guys

I think at the minute I've narrowed it down to either the nikon 60mm or the sigma 105mm. Ideally I need to find a shop that has them in stock so I can give them a try - but the likelihood of that is slim to none, so I guess I'll read some reviews and procrastinate a bit more then just go with gut instinct.
