OK, I'm putting my web site together FINALLY, but I really don't want to be coding a lot of stuff all the time, so I'm gonna go with a CMS. I was gonna go with a blog, bu I don't really like blogging.

Anyway, I want something flexible, lots of modules (especially a good gallery) and easy to use, customize.

So, which one to use?

What do you think about Jooma, Xoops, Mambo, WordPress or Serendipity?

What do you like/dislike?

Ever tried in gallery plugins in it?

No I havent, I tried it out long enough to see it lol. Thats the main reason im writing my own, so it will integrate into my site and my galleries alot easier.

WordPress is widely used, its based on b2 and another project thats like it is b2evolution. Id have to assume their should be decent plugins and add ons for it.

For myne I kind of want to have different blogs, one myself, one photography, one for programming and web design. On my site they all show up, on my photography page just the photography entries yada yada. I thought it would be cool todo.

I use PostNuke integrated with the Coppermine photo gallery. There are a ton of modules and it's easy to update. You can check out my page at //www.bryanbrazil.com

Joomla is extremely powerful and has a ton of plugins, and it has a lot of options for galleries too.

If you are hellbent on using a CMS then I would use something like mambo or joomla, but not bother with their gallery addons. You can always use a separate gallery script and just link to it from your CMS site.

Coppermine is a good one to manipulate to your liking.

Coppermine is being installed as I type... I'm looking into a few of the Coppermine modules for Joomla. I really dislike designing or running web sites anymore, hence the being hellbent on a CMS. :-)

I had been looking at Joomla also.. I can't seem to find the documentation files though...

Everything you need to know about joomla can be found HERE

Skip Mambo, Joomla is Mambo, after all the developers left the mambo project when the company that started it decided they wanted to charge for it. Everything Mambo has, joomla has and better at this point, especially once 1.5 releases.

This isn't the best example, but here's something I've customized out of Joomla. Example

Its never complete, and I still have alot of old pages I still need to convert, but it works :)

Nuke has a ton of modules, etc.. but because of its early popularity, its also the most hacked CMS out there. And until they rewrite it from scratch, it has too many holes. Keeping up with updates is mandatory.

Right now I'm working with a Joomla site that's in the late stages of development, and I like it very much.

If you want to see the site, it's at //maryland.mosaicoutdoor.org/joomla -- as I mentioned, it is still in development so some things may be broken. For the photo gallery, we're using CoppermineVis Gallery (at my recommendation). It's a very inexpensive plug-in that does a great job of integrating Coppermine into Joomla.

hmm, that site link isn't working for me. Coppermine one does, but the site isn't. even tried spelling joomla right but that didn't work lol

Drupal (used by such huge sites as The Onion) with Gallery 2.

ETA: My site, as an example - //www.chimericvisions.com

It's pretty bare just because I rarely get around to adding anything to it.

That's because I can't type. Try now.

I use PNcpg to integrate my Coppermine Gallery with PostNuke. Works like a charm!

I'm happy now ... I finally figured out Joomla's templating language Not difficult at all. :-)

This has got to be one of the nicest CMS's I've messed with. Serendipity is probably easier (it's a blog CMS) to use, but Joomla beats it hands down in easy of customization.

I've settled on the Easy Gallery component, if anyone wants to check that out. It's still a beta product (and Open Source), but I haven't really found any bugs. A lot easier than the Coppermine bridges I tried and does all I need it to do.

Here it is on my site. //leroydickson.net/index.php?option=com_easygallery&Itemid=26

I just started playing with Joomla, if you have any pointers to learning the templates then I'd appreciate it. I'm trying to put together a new version of the website for a local photo club.

Leroy,

Could you give me some tips on embedding images/media in a page?

Thanks,
Terry

This helped me immensely.

I'm looking for some kind of image chooser, but for now I just do it like this:

You can upload an image from the content editor on the menu bar there is an upload button. You should have the image sized appropriately ahead of time. Then click the insert image button on the editor. Your URL will be ./images/stories/filename.ext

Have you been playing around with Joomla any? I downloaded that and have been messing around some. I really like the system, but I must say that it's a bit overwhelming for me.

Loving it. It does seem a bit scary at first, but once it clicks in your head, it's all gravy.

One thing that'll help:
Components are things that work as pages. Like the gallery component.
Modules work as part of a page, like the menu module.
Mambots work behind the scene.
