I was checking my pepper plants today and noticed that a LOT of peppers had either been eaten or half-eaten and the tops of many of the plants had been bitten off. Banana peppers, jalepenos and chilles all had the same damage. Something had been eating like mad.... since yesterday! And now I know what!

This guy was attached to a limb and holding still so it looked just like a pepper, though larger than most of the peppers he's eaten in the last 24 hours. Sorry buddy, the deli is closed! His limb was broken off with him still attached and tossed into the forest behind my house. Enjoy the snack, birds!

Anyone have an idea what that little creep is called? I should give the pic a proper title.

Actually, missing the small brown horn that hornworms are known for, it appears to be closer to a member of the butterfly family. Not sure which, I will check my butterfly book for you later.

Oh, you wanted proper ID?

It doesn't have stripes like a hornworm either though... and hornworms aren't known for having "eyes"

This is probably a swallowtail or monarch butterfly caterpillar...

From what I've found not all hornworms have stripes, but I it didn't look just right still. It was the closest I could find, and the place found certainly fit.

Cindi, be a dear and do us a favour, okay?
Go call Howard and get him to pose for a few more shots from all angles, please?
You may have to pay him off in some pepper leaves, but maybe the promise of making him a DPC icon would be enough. :)

OMG ROFL!!

I could SO see this conversation!!!

"Hey, Howie??"
"Yes, Cindi?"
"I was wondering if you could be a dear and let me take a few more photos of you? I realize that I tried to feed you to the birds, but you DID try to eat all of my poor pepper plants."
"Cindi, dear, are you crazy? I wouldn't pose for your camera again for all the peppers in the world!!"
"But Howard!! You will be a DPC icon!!"
"What the heck is DPC?"
"OH, NEVERMIND!!!!"

hehe

LOL I'll see if I can find poor Howard before the birds do. :)

Poor Howard? more like poor birds, if they eat that pepper infested worm. the birds will be singing extra loud tomorrow do to burning ass.

I left a comment on the photo, I think he should be named after Mr Burns from the Simpsons. Looks alot like him even doing that greedy thing with his hands.
