Does anyone know of a program that removes something that has been installed on my computer that causes pop-ups every time I start Internet Explorer? I'm not looking for a pop-up blocker program but a program that removes whatever program has been installed on my computer that is causing a pop-up every time I start Internet Explorer.

I have done a full virus scan and it doesn't find anything.

Thanks!

Bill,

It might be spyware or something equivalent to that. Does it pop up if you aren't connected to the internet? Try Spybot, which will check your PC for spyware etc. The people who do ZoneAlarm have a similar product (PestControl or something like that).

There are a couple of good solutions to avoiding popups during browsing -

1. Install the google toolbar for IE
2. Use Mozilla or something like that instead of IE. Mozilla has built-in pop-up blocking

Hope this helps.

Edit - By the way, all the things I mentioned here are free ;)

I've had the best luck with Spybot.

I think Ad-aware from Lavasoft will solve your problem. Basic version is free for home use.

I find it easier to use than Spybot.

Depending on what exactly you've got, you may need to run both AdAware and Spybot. Spybot is often necessary to remove the most aggressive malware, and sometimes it needs to re-run upon reboot to get the last fragements.
My usual MO is to run Adaware, then Spybot, then reboot and let spybot run on restart if necessary.

Thanks everyone! I used the Spybot program and it found it and got rid of it. :-) It was driving me crazy. Glad you guys were able to help me out.

Thanks again!

Glad it worked out for you Bill. Another thing worth noting is that these types of program can get out of date quickly, so it's a good idea to regularly check for updates, much in the same way as you would with a virus checker.

I know this topic seems resolved, but don't be too sure. I had a similar problem and it came back every time I rebooted. Which brings me to a recommendation. If you have XP, make sure "System Restore" is turned on. It is really brilliant (Sorry, I hate Bill Gates and his empire as much as the next guy, but this feature is priceless). You can find it under "Accessories". You can pick any previous day that you used your machine and reset everything back, without losing data and with the option to undo your change. It is perfect for killing spyware.

I am an IT professional supporting 800 PC's at a local hospital. The BEST Spyware remover is by far Spybot, although Adaware works pretty well too. The only problem ive had with Adaware is that our virus system sees its scan portal as a potential virus..
