I'm still using a Pleistocene era Handspring Visor Deluxe PDA. It syncs with the ancient Palm Desktop software 4.0 on my Mac and works OK, but I really want to upgrade to a newer handheld and be able to use the iSync/iCal/Address Book apps on my Mac.

OK folks, I want something fairly low to middle. I don't want a cellphone/MP3 player/do everything. I use it mainly to store my calendar and contacts. I just need a good basic PDA to sync on my Mac.

Recommendations??

If you want to continue with the Palm-OS platform then any Tungsten model will serve you well. My father in-law just bought the E model and it is alright.

I use an old M515 and it is enough for me, I even use it as a wireless remote for my 400D.

I have a Tungsten E2, and a love/hate relationship with it. It is only a little bit over a year old, but the battery is dying already, plus my two games have locked up on me now.
The battery can't simply be replaced because it is one of those factory built in things, nothing that the "consumer" can exchange. I have asked at several major electronic retailers about getting a new one, but nobody deals with it, nobody would even send it off to get fixed.

Problems apart, while it was still working properly, it was the best one ever. I loved it!
Since I love it so much, I decided to look for a new one, this time paying attention to the battery. Well it seems that I'm a bit of a dinosaur to still want a PDA - they are sooooooooo yesterday!

Again, I have looked in several major stores (plus minor ones) only to find that they truly don't sell any PDA's anymore, or perhaps have a bit of old stock left. At Best Buy, they literally dug the last one out of a cupboard for me, but I didn't want that one.

When I asked what the alternative was, I was told that "everybody" just uses their cellphones for PDA functions. So I say: Ok, so if I was willing to go that way, what are my choices?
Turns out that the choices are Verizon, Verizon, or Verizon. Very underwhelming, indeed.

I have no clue at this point what I'm going to do. If YOU come up with something, please let me know!

That's truly depression Beetle! I knew I was a dinosaur, but I had no idea that the Cretaceous was truly over!

Now I don't know what I'm gonna do. I can't go back to a paper/pencil datebook. I like the electronic calendar, computer backup, yada yada. I don't like the idea of using a cellphone as my datebook, and I don't want to invest in the first gen iPhone.

Help!

If you get any of the many Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs, you can synchronize your calendar, contacts, etc. with your Mac via PocketMac.

Pocket PCs have a very rich interface and a great user experience when compared to Palms, etc. In fact, Palm has created a device specifically to run Windows Mobile. PPCs can cater to folks that just want calendaring and contact information, as well as enterprise users that need custom mobile solutions. They are very versatile devices, and come in a wide spectrum of configurations (and prices). Heck, if you don't already have a GPS navigation system, these devices (when loaded with nav software), can give you turn-by-turn, voice-enabled driving directions. :-)

I saw a Tungsten E in my local paper this morning for $30. May have even had a case. I could give you the phone number if you wanted to try and contact them and have it shipped to you...PM me if you want me to get that info. My dad has one and it's pretty straightforward, and doesn't have the instability issues that even my really fast Dell Axim 624mHz has.

How about one of the Palm-based phones such as the Treo?

I have the Tungsten E, but and a Mac (home) and a PC (work), but I've never synced on the Mac with anything other than Palm Desktop for Mac, which sucks butt compared to the PC version, or Outlook, which is what I use at work.

As far as the handheld is concerned, I'm very happy with my Tungsten E.

I waited 5 years to get a phone where my contacts would sync with my computer. That's more important TO ME that not having my calendar on my phone. I can't stand carrying two objects around. Phone and Palm.

I've had my Treo 650 for two and a half years and I've NEVER regretted it. I've wished for more and better features and software, but such is life.

Then it's time you upgraded to the Treo 700wx or the Treo 750. It definitely has better software and more features than the older 650's.

I don't like the idea of being forced to upgrade my hardware in order to get a MINIMAL software update. Palms innovation, or rather lack of it, annoys me.

Oh and I'll never buy a Windows based phone.

What's wrong with the iPhone? It's a phone, video iPod and (from what I understand) a full PDA. It even runs OS X and the Safari web browser. Not a "mobile" version, but true Safari. And you know it is going to be Mac compatiable...

I have a Tungsten T5 which was replaced by the TX. Which are the high end of the Palm PDA's not the low end, the low end is a zire.

The T5 is a hell of alot better then the TX except the TX has wifi.
T5 does has and will:

- Work as a USB drive
- Player WMA AAC MP3 and some video formats
- Open and Word and Excel files, Opens Powerpoint presentations.
- anything else a pda does
320x480 wide screen color display
412mhz processor
Has 256mb of internal memory not so great but an SD card fixes that
bluetooth connectivity

The TX:
Cut down to 128mb of memory, slower 300mhz processor, no usb drive function.
BUT - Upgraded web browser, wifi built in.

I'm not dissing the iPhone, I just don't want one. I'm a big fan of Apple, but the iPhone is only a 4 gig iPod (or 8 gig if you spring for the $600 model) and surely requires a hefty contract for the internet access. I already have an iPod and phone (neither of which I carry with me habitually) and I don't want to replace them all with a single device. I really just want a decent, low to mid PDA to hold calendar and contact info.

I use the Treo phone with the Palm OS. It connects to Sprint service. Comes with email, text messaging, web access ... but more important for me has the plam contacts and calendar and synchs with the Palm Desktop ... just like always. Works great and appeals to my Palm legacy bias. Great battery life. I synch to a PC so I'm not sure about Mac compatibility ... But I sure like the Treo.

What's wrong with the iphone? Well, there is nothing ground-breaking with it. There is nothing the iphone has that Pocket PC phones haven't had for years.

Oh, and one feature Apple is touting that it doesn't have a keyboard and that everything is touch-screen. Well, Pocket PCs, in the beginning, never had keyboards. During the first and second generations of these devices, the customers complained about not being easily able to type a short message. After a few years, we started seeing QWERTY keyboards on these devices.

Mark my words...it will happen to the iphone, too. iphone users will be screaming to be able to type-out a quick text message or email on a decent physical keyboard.
