I returned today from a week in Edmonton. While there, I used my sis-in-law's computer to burn my photos to disc. After burning I tested to make sure it had worked and that I could access the shots, then formatted the SD card.
Soooo... I flew home, stuck the CD in the ol' computer and... nothing.
Properties say the disc is empty, a popup said the disc was either corrupt or in a format which windows couldn't read.

These shots are VERY important to me. The reason for my trip was for the funeral of my aunt, the last survivor of my mother's siblings.
I had shots of cousins, some of whom I haven't seen in 25+ years and may never see again. I doubt this group will ever be assembled in one place again, and it just makes me sick to think that I've screwed up my only chance at a photo memory to share with them.

What might have happened to it? Is there ANYTHING that I can possibly try?? PLEEEEEASE, somebody tell me my shots aren't gone forever! :(

When you burned the CD did you close the session? Do you have the same software that was used to burn the CD?
06/14/2007 12:29:31 AM · #3
Oh, that sux!
First, I know there are programs that can get data back from harddrives and such, someone on here may know if there is the same for sd cards, I would say if you havn't yet, DON'T do anything else to the card before you can find out.
Have you tried the cd in any other computer or anything? I have burned discs before, and had them not show in some things, but they wdork in others.
Any possibility that on your sis's computer, where you burned the disc, would the pics still be on her 'puter?

This is a GOOD suggestion! Sometimes the disc may not have finalized yet.

That's what I am thinking, it was a CDRW and the session wasn't closed...

Sheila , have you used the SD card since the format?

Also, maybe you grabbed the wrong CD?

I have come across this sort of problem before. Try reading the CD in another machine if it reads it then use that machine to copy the CD to another CD and all will be well. If it does not read it then send it to your sis-in-law and get her to copy it to her hard drive. She should then buy a new CD writer 'cause hers is writing duff disks that only it can read!

I use badcopy pro //www.jufsoft.com/badcopy/ for everything from CF, to zip disks...

They have an eval copy out that you can run to see if it sees anything.

I used her windows "write to CD" the same as I do on my own. I didn't notice what version of Windows she's running, but I think it's XP, same as mine. I did everything just as I do at home :(

After doublechecking to make sure it worked, I deleted the file of photos from her computer, formatted the SD card to make room for more shooting, and have put another 112 shots on it. The worst thing is that I probably wouldn't have needed to clear the card to fit the rest on it :(

The CD is a Memorex CD-R from a new spindle. It's the only one I took with me and the only one around her computer, so it's definitely the right one, dammit.

When I tried running it, the light on the CD drive flickered constantly and it took forever to open the window, which showed nothing when I did.
It did the same on hubby's, though he didn't have the patience to even wait for the window to open. I'll try it again on his after he's done for the night.

I'm trying this one, and if it doesn't work then I'll check out Andy's suggestion. I'll let you know what happens.
Thanks, everyone, for your help :D

if the ISObuster doesn't work can you send her back your disk and see if she can access it, if so maybe she can at least save the files to her computer and try to make you a new one. If she is able to read the CD would she have the ability to maybe put them back onto a SD card? If so I'd send one of those too and tell her to just copy them right back on it using windows explorer and send it back to you...or even she could take the SD card to a photo center such as WalMart and have them burn a CD...just a thought.

Good luck, that sure does suck.

Or just send her some money for a cheap JumpDrive.

Look on the bottem of the cd... do you see etching marks for proof that something was written on there?
Also bring it into my work we can try it in our photo lab machines

It's going veryyyyyy slowwwwlyyyy..... I'm still hoping.
Yeah, I could try sending it back to her and she could send me the files if she has any luck. We'll see what happens here.

Noisemaker, I didn't look, and can't now cuz ISObuster is doing its thing.

I really appreciate all the suggestions. I love DPC!

Okay, ISObuster was a washout, after 4 hours waiting. I'm not sure if it found anything or not, because once I reached a certain point I couldn't continue without buying :(
I'm tired... I'll fight some more tomorrow... *sighhhh*

If you cannot recover from the CD, can you recover from the SD card - quick formatting does not delete the data, only allows it to be overwritten. If you have not used the SD card since you formatted it, you should be able to recover the images from that.

Is the CD physically damaged in any way? It is possible to fix scratches etc.
06/14/2007 07:18:44 AM · #19
Also, are the images stored in a cache on the original computer, or on that computer's drive?
06/14/2007 07:32:59 AM · #20
When you deleted the files on the original computer did they get sent to the recycle bin? If so, they may be recoverable on that computer if you didn't empty the bin.

Do you know anybody who owns a Mac? Just for fun, have them see if anything shows up when it's mounted on the Mac desktop.

If you havent used the card, Get Zero Assumption recovery 8.0 they have a free memroy card recovery tool that should get 99% of the files back assuming you havent used the card. Or any that havent been overwritten yet.

As far as the cd goes it should be readable still ont he drive it was burned on.

When you burned the CD, you might have burned it at the maximum speed (or at a higher speed). When CDs are burned at maximum speed, they cannot be read from some older CD drives. Is your CD drive an old one? Try reading the CD in other computers. It should work. Worst case - send the CD back to your sis-in-law and her computer will be able to read it.

not sure if someone said this before...
try CD in other PC, try in CD-R drives or DVD-R drives. Try dedicated DVD/CD reader drive. If not ship CD back where you know it works and have them reburn it. Do NOT try to close session now if you did not close it before.
