Any comments on this system please.
Editing in photoshop a priority.

Thanks in advance.

They used to be for floppy drives. Now a days plenty of things can be fitted.

Card Readers
Zip Drives (old)
Floppy Drives (old)
Fan Controllers

bunch of stuff.

3.5 inch drives can be used to hold any of those that rain just listed, but also thats where any extra hardrives will go. (unless you're going external)

Doesn't mention which Motherboard its using, so I'd check to see what the maximum ram it can hold is. 2gig is almost standard now, and ram is where most of your performance will come from, especially if you have multiple photos open.

I did forget that. with the face plate on u can tuck a 3.5 inch hard drive behind them. Many cases have internal 3.5 slots empty but if not the others can be used just the same with the faceplate on.

3.5" drive bays are a great place for your toes...
They keep them warm ;-)

Thanks guys,
I agree on the memory capacity, the motherboard would be intel 946GZ chipset Micro ATX motherboard.Purports to support up to 8Gb memory.
Looks ok I guess?

just dont buy any of those screens - they're all TN panels

Thanks Robert,
I was thinking of leaving the monitor for a while anyway.

I know the Intel 945 chipset sucks... Let me do a quick looksee as to what a 946GZ...

ED: Yup, If you have to go intel you want a 965 chipset... Intel had some issues with the 915 and 945s.

Hi Andy,
Now I am confused. my friend has also chucked in saying I should concider AMD not Intel ..faster, and cooler. mmm!

don't forget you can clock the nuts off of the Core2's :)

my 6600 is currently running @ 3.1GHz on stock cooling..

I would just price out all the parts seperately and see if that makes the price any cheaper first. AMD cpus are great. As you said: faster, cooler, and cheaper. The cheaper being the best part. If I were to buy a new computer, it would have an AMD cpu.

Hmmm. Confuzzled on the AMD thang. The newer Intel Core2 Duo chips are lower power than the comparable AMD chips, and performance is "equal or better." If I were building a year ago, AMD was looking pretty darn good, but today, Intel seems to have regained the top spot.

AMD still has the top spot as far as performance goes. Intel may be better at certain things, but overall AMD has the advantage. Here is a quick and dirty comparison of the two done by CNET.

AMD lost the performance race when the core duo's hit.

That report is nearly 2 years old. Got any newer references?

Yeah, but not by much, and it may not even be noticeable for 2D work. Instead of taking 30 seconds to complete a task, eg., an AMD may take one minute. I think it would be more important for the OP to use the large savings in purchasing more RAM, especially if he's going to be using MS Vista.

If the OP does decide in favor of an AMD system, I would urge him to get one with the new 65nm manufacturing technology that now has AMD equal to Intel regarding efficiency of power useage and heat production. These chips are much cheaper than Intel chips, as well.

If the OP's new system does have Vista I would make sure that any peripherals or other hardware/software to be used from his current system, such as a calibration/profiling device, is compatible with the new MS OS. If not, I would suggest sticking with an XP system, if you can still get it.

Here you go, 2 years changes everything. I didn't notice the date on that review.

Some interesting stuff there,a little above my head.
I shall be aiming for maximum ram according to the motherboard limit, probably 4gb.
Intel seems to be slightly ahead here.I'll study some more,
Thanks a lot for your comments guys,
Paul.
