What happened to JJ's Free Study? Has anyone seen the original? There seems to be no SC announcement of the recalculation. I'm so sad... One of my faves to date.

The original was submitted and reviewed by site coucnil.
The submission is at the very end of the results pages in the list of challenge DQ's.

I do wish somehow we could see originals that have been DQ'd to get a feel for what is over the line and what isn't. On the other hand it may lead to those long threads of bickering, but whenever I see a DQ for burning or cloning, I always want to see the original so I can gauge my own work against it and see how close to the line I'm running.

I agree, The weird thing was it was an advanced editing challenge so what is the deal with dodging and burning??? Hmmmm fishy...

There's nothing wrong with dodging and burning. The problem is that he removed something in the background that he shouldn't have. He went too far. From the DQ comment:

"You may not use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer's description of the photograph"

Edit to add: anyone remember the controversy around the DQ of this one?

KDO eventually posted her original, but I'm sure it's long gone now that she's no longer active. The woman was sitting in front of a sofa or something, and she completely removed the whole background.

I would think that yeah, some significant background was 'removed' or obscured is probably it. JJ even said on his notes that he did a lot of work to get to the final version. A shame about the dq, but still remains a stunning image and definitely a fav for me.

I agree, it would be helpful to see original comparisons in these cases, but I can understand where it is up to the photographer on whether they wish to share.

From JJ's comment: "Next door table at a Chinese restaurant. Stolen moment... "

It seems rather straight forward where the line is..... where's the restaurant?

His subjects are completely out of context now, he has turned what was a candid into something that appears to be a studio shot.

And after deliberation, that was the opinion that the SC had to come to as well. :(

I would be interested to know (Karma or anybody from SC) why the DQ happened after the ribbon had already been in place for a few days.

I realize there are a TON of photos to check, but it seems so brutal to have someone win a ribbon - or any score for that matter - sit with it pretty for days on end and then be dq'd. Is it merely a time factor, like when you guys get to it?

This one must have been a tough call, and required some extended discussion by the SC behind closed doors.

Bingo.

Poor decision, IMO. Given the level of vapidity of so many images here, only further encouraged by this league thing and the reluctance of even fewer people to push their boundaries, to DQ the only really human shot on the front page, and by far the most human shot to grace the front page in ages, is both a big deal, and, well, just rubbish, I think.

It's another kick towards the manageable homogeneity of this place, and another blow to its level of interest and excitement.

while I agree with much of what you said are you suggesting that if a shot is "human" that it should operate on a different set of rules that every other shot. People keep complaining about this shot being DQ'd but only because they like it. i rarely see someone fighting the cause for a shot that finishes 524th.

Perhaps a poor decision on that level alone, but we can't start running challenges on the basis of emotional and humanitarian impact alone.

As for "by far the most human shot to grace the front page in ages", I think you're a little bit off the mark. The shot that replaces jj's is very human and engaging, and I believe there have been quite a number of similarly engaging and humanistic photos on the front page.

While I agree that DPC is mostly about homogeneous, cookie-cutter stock type photos... it's pretty much always been that way. I think more issue should be taken up with the fact that jj felt that he had to mess with the background of that photo as much as he did in order to get it to fit in here... which says more about DPC than the DQ ever can.

wow, those are fighting words my friend, though very well said fighting words.

(not saying I agree or disagree, just a compliment on your choice of wording to make said point)

e301, it all comes down to: "If you don't like the rules, the people, or the photos... find somewhere you do."

The rules are established and DQs are handed out when they're broken. This is not an "art" site where you can do whatever you want. It's a competitive site, and the rules are there.

i agree that he is one of the best on the site but many comments like his and some of yours in the past seem like you guys think you are better than the rest of us. It seems (to me) like a few of you want to chase off those that don't live up to your emotional value.

JJ isn't being chased off. It seems to me that is going to far in your reading of this. His image was disqualified. It was a beautiful image, and he did a great job of editing it. In his own notes, he tells us that he managed to get a worthwhile picture from a snapshot. SC argued quite a bit about this DQ. It was by no means unanimous. But as SC we can't just do as we wish, we are bound by the rules.

We are trying to work at changing some of these things (rules) so that images such as JJ's do not get disqualified, but at the time, we really had no other choice.

he is referring to the comment directed at Ed to find another site. So E301 being chased off not JJ. I would be surprised if JJ left the site after 300+ entries because of one DQ. hell it is obvious that he could get as many ribbons as he wants but instead he submits what he likes.

Oh! I'm sorry, I misunderstood. [ursula red-faced again] :)
It really hurt to DQ jj's image :(

It's hard to "chase off" someone who just said that they don't like the rules, the photos, or the people. Sounds like he's just around because he can be. Good photographer or not, there's no reason that anyone should have to put up with insults because he doesn't like the fact that the rules were adhered to.
