I have been doing headshots for a while now and I have yet to find a place other than walmart to print them...which stinks because at walmart they only do 8x10 when in reality thats the size of the PICTURE but it needs to be on an 8 1/2x11. At what point does a proffessional photographer buy a really good printer and how do you find them? What would be the best way to print headshots and stuff if you are not in a big city. What about in a big city? Thanks!

I use printroom.com. But they don'y offer a 8.5x11 either. That's not a size I have really seen anywhere.

Cindi, have you used their books? If so, how is the quality?

I'm wondering this too. I am looking into printing my wedding samples in an easy to view book and figured I would give them a shot. I am planning on printing one up after the three weddings this fall.

To the OP, I will agree with MPix. They are fast and easy to use.

8 1/2 x 11 is a very odd size. I've never seen that in photos. Is that a requirement that your models have?

Beleive it or not you can bring a picture in to Walgreens or CVS and give them the file and they send it off. 2 weeks later you can have something the size of a movie poster. I don't know if they go any bigger than that but I think it's like 20 bucks. Check it out next time you're there.

Plenty of companys that do poster turn arounds alot faster. Remember they send it off to the third party lab you could be hiring todo your work. Cut out the middle man. CVS uses Kodak of course like many places and kodaks out house services are slow.

Yeah but I am ALWAYS at CVS and I thought it was just neat that they do that. I have never wanted to have it done or needed it but hey it was just a suggestion. I know sometimes I am just to lazy to have to send it to someone else and it's just easy for me to walk into CVS and say here. But your right... They do just send it off to a third party company.

The actual picture size is an 8X10 but the paper is a 8.5x11 you will just have a border around the head shot.

Spend the money and go to office max (or where ever, I know Jeff will say somethign about this location) and buy you a good printer. Print them yourself...

How much would a good enough printer cost to make it look proffesional though?

I have a cheap lexmark that puts out a good picture. I also have a Brother 4 in 1 (that I use for everything really) and it puts out a good picture.

It all depends on what you're looking for. I'm sure there are people on here that can preach about printers all day long but I wouldn't buy anything under $100.00. I also wouldn't spend $1000.00 on a printer either. So it really depends on how deep your pockets are. Go to BestBuy, CC, Walmart, Office Depot, Office Max, anywhere that sells printers and test them. Tell If they are not plugged in just ask someone. they will plug it in and you can print off a picture. Get an idea as to what you want.

USB, Hotwire, Card reader, etc.. Then take a .jpg with you and print off that one picture. Write the model number on the bottom of the page and compare the printers. That's what I would do..

OR... Check out Consumer Reports and see what they say. (you may need to register if you don't have an account)

I just got a HP 6980 that prints a very nice picture. seems liek it costs about 2.50 or so in ink to print though (at HP's office depot prices)

edit to add: don't know if it matters to you but one reason i chose this one is that it can be networked. i have it plugged into my router and any of our computers can print to it.

check out the epson r800 at bhphoto

a few years ago it was good enough for all the pros.. so it shouldn't be too bad even though it is a couple years old. It prints A4 and is the printer I use to make professional prints at home. Then choose the paper you want - which can be nice thick stock. The prints are also archival from the printer.... so they are good.

if you need A3 in size they make the r1800 which is the same as the r800 except bigger.

I use software called Express Digital where I load up the prints I want and they get sent directly to the lab for processing. I get real time data on the progress of the prints. Eg, sent to lab, waiting to be processed, in process, shipped from lab.

I use Richmond Camera and their quality is beautiful and since everything is shipped to me, I guess it doesn't really matter where you live. However, Express Digital, the company who makes the software interface between the photographer and lab, has a list of labs across the country to choose from.

Here's a sample of a wedding I just did Digital Express. My customer's access this page directly from my website here. So, I can either order them directly with their super low prices (imo) or my client can order them. I can mark up the prints to whatever price I want and they will send either to me or the customer depending on what I choose.

This has to be less expensive than printing them yourself. One 8.5x11 sheet of photo paper is about $1, toner is expensive and you eat your mistakes. An 8x10 from Richmond Camera is $1 period.

Miller's, the professional side of mpix.com, would be my choice for professional lab. But I agree with the recommendation to use your own printer for an 8X10 in the middle of an 8.5X11 sheet of paper. Epson R800 would be fantastic as long as you don't need a wide.

Most models I know have 9X12" books, I was surprised to hear 8X10 on an 8.5X11", is this for actors?
