ok, so i wanted to see just how bad cheap glass was... especially cheap long glass. So i took my d40, and a fully manual 500mm f/8-32 prime by phoenix. Here's the results:

- full shot resized to 640

- 100% crop

Both of the above are unedited, straight from raw to cs3 resize crop on 2nd and save for web.

Actually not as bad as I thought considering that I still suck at getting the right fstop and exposure down. Wonder how it would act in hands of someone who actually knew what they were doing lol

and with my crappy PP skills

i dont't think it's bad at all, except for the chromatic aberration.
the background is too bright, a flash with a straight diffuser would have helped. at least so i've seen couple of profesional nature photographer do it.

Best lens I own is the cheapest. My $70 50mm lens.

How much did that cost you? It's not the 500mm fix aparature mirred lens is it?

No, its not the mirror. And it retails for $100. Figured i'd give it a go and test it out.

thats some really bad CA.. and sharpness isnt all there ether
you get what u pay for..

wonder how that lens would compare to the sigma 50-500 @ 500mm, or other, more expensive lenses in the 500mm range

yeah, i wanna look in my area for places that might rent lenses and give a few a try. The bigma 50-500 goes for about $1k but heard it softens up after 450ish. I'd be interested to see if its just my inexperience with full manual or if its really that bad. My uncle's retirement party is weekend after next so I'll have him take some shots since he's got alot more experience than me and see what kind of results he gets.

For the record, i get alot of soft shots with my nikon 70-300g also, so I'm sure the photos would come out alot sharper once i get some more experience.
