I've invested a lot of time over the last 3 months making major changes to my original website dewdodesign. It has undergone a domain name change, logo change and general useabilty change so i'd really appreciate some feedback on aspects such as ease of use, loading times etc. Some of the content/writing may still be subject to change and I havn't completed the order pages but some currently do work.

www.blueriverphotography.com

I'm still in the process of learning and creating, both on the photography side and the web design side so I am completely open to new ideas, comments and suggestions

Thanks for your time :o)
Chris

Looks good...the text is kind of small ... or maybe that's because I just woke up. Otherwise, my eyes could only take one line or so...When you say I currently offering...I think you mean I am currently offering.

Looks good though.

I really like the site, it looks very nice and well put together. I font size looked fine on my screen. The coloring is very nice. The only thing that seemed a little off was the shot of yourself. You might try a few self portraits and find one that looks more natural for your self. I think it really stuck out because it is the first photo you really see on the site. Otherwise I think you have done an excellent job! Nice work!

None of the galleries load, are they done yet?

yes the galleries are complete and should load - I think this may be a problem related to using safari and firefox as the galleries were created using a flashMX add-on called slideshowpro, I seem to remember having similar viewing problems when trying to view on a mac using safari.
Does anyone have any ideas on how this could be fixed?

No, the galleries do not load in Firefox...but they work fine with IE.

I like the site. It is sharp and user-friendly. I was not able to load the galleries, though. You may be right that it is not working for Safari users ( like me).

I also thought that since you are offering your services to people, you should probably have a "portraits" gallery, as it is this that people usually hire photographers to do.

Good stuff man...you're well on your way to making a living out of your passion for photography

your site is easy to navigate and concise which is the most important part. many slick, designey sites look super hot but are impossible to navigate. I took a look through and have a few tips that might help the site read a bit better. I'm a print graphic designer, but many of the same principles can be applied to web work.

First, I think the contrast between the black background and the ultra-blue of your logo and other smaller text items, as well as the acid green in the tree illustration portion of the logo is a bit harsh. I think it might not be as oppresive if you picked a light-ish shade of grey as the background, then used a navy blue instead of the bright cobalt/royal blue, and used a more natural shade of green for the trees.

Second, I think the page would look more consistent if the white outlined box containing the shifting photographs and the blurb that starts with "welcome..." lined up with the grey line that separates the content from the nav bar above it on the left and right sides, then lined the small text at the bottom of the page with the information above it.

Third, on your intro/home page, I think the word welcome should be left aligned, as all the other text is left aligned, and it looks a little odd being the only centre justified text. There's also a typo in the first sentence, it says "As an amateur photographer, I currently offering..." - that "I" should read "I'm" I think.

So that's what immediately caught my attention when I first visited your site, and I had the same problem as some others where I couldn't access your galleries using Safari.

Your photography is pretty cool, and having a site will help you immensely - good luck!

it's not a firefox problem, I use slideshow pro in my site as well and it works in firefox. You messed up the coding somewhere I think.

the design looks nice, but yeah I can't see the galleries.

and dude, amateur or not ... don't give your services away to everyone, it makes it that much harder for everyone who is trying to pay rent by taking photos.
If you want practice etc. for your portfolio you can go out and shoot for yourself, but advertising yourself as free is detrimental. I'm not saying I've never done anything for free, but you could keep it to friends etc. for beginning practice.

If your photos are worth nothing now why would anyone pay for them later?
Keep that in mind.

Hey firstly i'd like to say thanks to everyone that has commented, especially to s_lanterman for taking the time to write so much, it's really appreciated.

Petrakka - it's interesting that you have managed to get this to work on firefox, do you know if it works on safari too?
I wonder what i have left out of the coding? Do you think it could perhaps be that i have an old version of slideshowpro and i need to download an update or patch?

have a minor grammer error on the welcome window that pops up, it says "As an amatuer photographer I currently offering my ..." should be "I AM currently..."

otherwise my only other issue is it is so small on my 1152x864 monitor and has tons of dead space but you have to think about the other people and monitor settings so I undertand why it's this way, no biggy.

I would think about rewording the whole free thing. Say something like.... You want to give back while gaining experience in photography subjects you normally don't do and are currently doing pro-bono (sp?). Hey if it makes lawyers sound generous then it's gota work for anyone right :-))
