Can any one help.
I would like to purchase a Macro and a Wide Angle Lens for my Nikon D40 but am totally confused as to what lenses can be used with the camera.

If you are a D40 owner and use additional lenses I would be interested to hear what lenses you have. (Exact model numbers would be appreciated) as intend to try getting off ebay / amazon etc)

If any other lens types are used would also be interested in details as well.

Is it true I can use any Nikon Lenses (Even ones with no auto focus) & focus, set fstops using rings on the lenses)

Thanks

nope with the D40 you can't use all nikon lenses!
that's a huge drawback of the D40

actually, you _can_ use most nikon lenses.

the thing missing is the autofocus motor in the body, so if the lens doesn't have an internal autofocus motor, you have to use it as a manual focus lens.

It is only a drawback if AF is a big deal to you. Personally, I use AF at most 5% of the time. As others have mentioned any lens with a CPU (all AF & P lenses) can be used, just without AF. Actually the only Nikon lenses that can't be mounted are Non-Ai lenses (pre-1977). Sure without modification (chipping) the manual focus lenses will not provide metering on the D40, but there are many instances where that is no big deal such as studio flash. After all it does have a histogram.

I've thought about getting a D40 with either a 45mm 2.8P or an AF28mm f2.8, as it would make a great little "pocket" camera.

Help! I have a Sony A100 but I know that eventually I am going to want to buy a canon eos or something and I was wondering if there are any lenses that are compatible with both sony and canon. How do I find that out??? Do you think it's worth it to have a bunch of lenses for 2 different cameras that aren't compatible with the other or should I just wait and sell the a100 and just stick to one brand?? Thanks!

There isn't anything that will mount to both without an adaptor. I'd stick to one or the other if I were you. You won't be disappointed with the Canon! By the way, if you want more info about any of this stuff you should probably start a new thread.

Thanks for the replys, at work they only have the d70 and the normal lense that comes with it and nothing else. I am not sure if I want to get a d80 because doesn't canon have something better out there? I am going to look into the adaptor ring because if that is the case i may just buy cannon lenses and use an adaptor until i get a canon. i love the sony i just want a really good range of lenses at good prices that i can use with it

Ok, getting back on topic...

I've got the D40 and the myth about D40 not being able to use certain lenses is just that... a myth. As creature pointed out, thats the list of AF lenses that will work. The only lenses that won't work are the IX lenses, because they extend into the body, which would hit the mirror, and they won't work on any 35mm nikon body.

Now most will say that having to manual focus or meter is too much trouble and say its not worth it. The d40 is made for entry level SLR users, and actually using those settings on manual, is going to force you to learn aperture, f/stops and get your eye used to sharp focus which will help you in the long run.

I kept shooting auto at first, because if you're taking decent photos, why change anything? I grabbed the 700-300mm G lense since it was cheap and i'm on a budget, and it got me used to manual focusing faster. Now I picked up a completely manual lense and its definately giving me a crash course on knowing my settings. Especially with macro, you're going to probably manual focus alot.

Here is a list of Nikon lenses. How up to date it is, I'm not sure. At the top there's links for 3rd party companies. The right hand column will tell you which camera their for.
