I am finally about to get cable turned on. I have been in my new apartment for about a week without cable and it is killing me.

Man, I've made it without cable for maybe 5 years now. I do miss ESPN, but that's about it. DiscoveryHD would also be cool, but those two channels are not worth the extra $50/month over basic, basic cable (ie. good reception on networks)...

Cable internet - right?
Hardly anything worth turning the TV on for anymore, as I think the janitor is in charge of programming.

I thought I was the only guy in the US without cable. (except the 13.00 variety; local channels and about 5 homeshopping networks, + courtTV).

My wife is Dutch and I'm from a conservative background. What is your excuse? ;)

We don't have cable either. I think it is great. I have so much more time (that would have probably been spent on watching the tube).

Nope, I'm there with ya. I'd cancel the basic cable since I get the HD network signals over the air, but I get $10 off my internet by having the basic basic (which is $13/month) so it's a wash. Plus I get Discovery channel for that $3/month. Not HD though...

And THAT my friends is the secret to how you take a good photo!!! Pry yourself away from the TV...

OK, commercial is over, gotta go.

Other than one month in high school, I'll be cracking my 33rd cableless year this monday. I get three channels, which is more than I need.

Unfortunately for me, DowseDesigns comment aside, it seems there's more to take good photos than JUST turning off the tv.

We had cable TV-Internet-Phone, for $150 a month for years, until some snot-nosed tech talked back to me. (Cogeco doesn't have customers, they only have people they deem worthy to bless with the holiness of their cable.) Now we have Satellite-ADSL-PoTS for $200 per month. I'm gladly paying the extra $50 for decent customer service.

:-P

Hmm... I pay $14/month for the most stripped down basic cable available. I'm pretty sure I have ESPN. I don't have DHD, but I do have regular Discovery. They generally don't advertise the super basic, and I've even been treated like I asked them to shave my head when dealing with it, but heck, $14 for cable!

Of course, I pay considerably more than that for the cable internet, about $45 I think.

I haven't had cable for two years now... AND I MISS IT :´(

I love to watch series or just to zap and zap and zap.

In the UK we used to have freeview which is something but Sky was just too expensive for me

No cable, no satellite, no over-the-air stations in range --- total bliss!!!

Double check that. If you are getting it, I'm 99.9% sure it's by accident... ;) ESPN is so addictive to men that no self-respecting cable company would give it away for $14/month.

Haven't had cable in ... ummm ... more years than I have fingers to count on.

Haven't watched a TV show regularly in about 3 years. I do enjoy watching movies on DVD. Having young kids makes it tough to be there for an 8 pm show, and I have other things I want to do besides taping and watching anyway.

This state of being is quite relaxing, but it wasn't a conscious choice. Just kind of stopped watching.

Every night after the kids are in bed (9-10 pm), it's a choice between shooting/editing pix, goofing off on DPC, and watching a movie.

What, No freeview?

(Well, over here, No TV is Free!)

As long as I can get the Discovery channels, NGeo and the normal 5 channels, I'm happy. Currently Boston Legal, Heroes and (The)CSI(s), are on top of my watchlist. (Oh and Shark is ok, if a bit repetitive)

You can probably tell... I watch quite a bit of TV. But most of it is Intelligent, Mind enhancing TV.

When the programming is so good that you realize that 30 minutes has gone by and the TV guide has scrolled about 15 times. On a side note, I almost have the Billy Mays infomercial scripts memorized now.

I think we have a few cable channels (hubby watches a lot of sci-fi), but they're all full of ads.

I am allergic to most forms of advertising, so my Blockbuster subscription plan is the only reason I still know how to turn on the TV.

Don't worry about "going without" - it can be done quite safely :-)

How many ads do you get in the USA in an avg. 1Hr show?

I've always assumed it was more than the 3 ad breaks we get, because in American shows there seem to be a lot more 'punctuated' sections than we actually punctuate with adverts. (Although our ad breaks avg. 5 minutes in length. So we total 15 mins, via 3 breaks.)

I haven't counted in a while now because I really really do avoid watching anything with ads in, but I know it takes me 40 minutes to watch a taped 60 minute show, and that includes the time it takes to whizz over the ads .
I guess that means the show can only be about 35 minutes long..... close to 1/2 the movie time is taken up by credits and ads.

I wonder where it will end. Yet there are still people who tell me they LIKE ads!!! I better not go into that, though, or this will be moved to the rant section.

I don't LIKE ads, but they can be handy, because, as I said they are on avg. 5 minutes long, so they are long enough to have a pee or make a cuppa. On the Beeb, they don't do adverts, and if there's a film on or something, it's good, but if you're bursting...

I wouldn't even mind an occasional block of ads, as long as I get WAY WAY more show than ads. However, towards the end of the movies it always gets worse and worse. The last half hour is actually more ads than show - constant interruptions just when you're chewing your nails.

There is no way anybody could take enough tea or potty breaks to fill even half the ad-time they force onto us.
