| Im shooting with the ikon D40 and I want to know if someone could tell me the best way to do night photoshoots...The problem Im having is that when I try to do night photoshoots I have to use a long shutter speed on the tripod because of the lack of light but Im shooting a person so they often cant be still long enough for the shot to be taken without them being all blurred from moving...I need to know how to stop this....thanks |

| shooting moving objects at night is hard. It's best if you get some decent light onto them so you can decrease your shutter speed. You can also increase your aperture to also decrease the shutter speed. To make it easy for the person to stay still, make sure they're supported - like sitting down or resting on something. |

You can also turn up the ISO. Of course you get noise but its better than a blurry shot.

bump up ur iso as well to keep ur shutter at 50 or so. you can deal with the noise caused by the high iso in post processing

Oh yes. Also use a shutter speed no slower than the reciprical of the length of your lens. i.e. When you are zoomed in to 55mm the slowest you should shoot at is 1/55th of a second. Of course that rule is more for handholding but it can help with low light shots in general too.

| A flash is a good start. the nikon lighting system is pretty cool and works great with off camera flashes, but I'm not sure how many of the advanced features have made their way down to the D40. |

Sync your flash at the front or rear of the shot depending on what effects your after, this will capture your main subject in more detail. As others have mentioned before up your ISO and adjust shutter speed.

I think pretty much all of them, except for the ability to use the on-board flash as a commander. |
