So my 20mm seems to have an issue with the aperture: Changing the F-stop on the camera settings has no effect on the picture, and it seems as though it is stuck on 2.8.

Is there something simple that I may have overlooked or do I have to take it into the shop?

Are you sure that you have the lens' manual aperture ring locked to the smallest aperture when mounted?

yes, its locked in at f22

When you unmount the lens and actuate the aperture ring on the lens, does the aperture close/open? If so, it might be contacts. Try cleaning the contacts on the lens and body.

Take the lens off the camera and manually activate the lever that moves the aperture. It should move easily and snap back to the original position quickly. The lever also should not be bent. I'm assuming that other lens you have do not have this problem. If the lever is hard to move or doesn't snap back easily you may want to have it cleaned and adjusted.

I just tried manually moving the aperture lever.... it moves freely back and forth but does not activate the aperture. Cleaning the lense and camera did not seem to help either. Looks like permanent shallow DoF for me :(

Thanks very much for the help guys, I do appreciate it

Just to be sure, I wasn't completely clear; You moved the lever on the mount end that mates with the camera? It's a very small lever sticking out of the bottom of the lens. If that doesn't control the aperature somethings broke. If there's a repair shop nearby have them check it. You never know it might be cheap to fix.

Sounds like the aperture mechanism is stuck. Should not be a huge bill to get it repaired. Several years ago, I had a Nikkor 105 f1.8 stuck like that after my mom's cat peed in my camera bag. The bill wasn't horrendous and I think the tech charged me extra for the smell.

(It's a long story, let's just say I learned my lesson.)
