....purchasing a mat cutter.

What do I look for when purchasing?

C&H, Logan, Fletcher, Gunner?

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I use the Logan handheld... takes a steady hand, but it's very flexible and pretty easy to use, just keep that blade sharp.

I bought and use a $30 (US) mat cutting tool from Michaels Arts and Crafts. It works well.

You didn't mention how many and how often you will be cutting. If you are doing this as a service say, a dozen or more per day, then you'll want to shop around to see if this model will work in your environment.

The first time you try it, I recommend practicing once or twice on some scrap mat board. It took me a couple of test runs before I got the hang of it.

I use Logan. Whatever brand you get, if you are going to cut more than a few mattes, I would highly recommed one that you can fit a full size matte in (32x40) and has good smooth guide rails for the cutter so you get consistant straight lines. They do take a bit of practise so do a few cuts on scrap matte first.
